I've heard the "Colgate is worse" line but that doesn't match up with my experience. I've really liked the pucks of Colgate that I've used.
Agree that the pre-Combe Williams is great stuff and that the current formulation is "challenging." It tends to produce a dry, frothy, unstable lather if lathered "normally," but has an inflection point where it converts to a better, more stable lather with an excessive amount of water and loading. All-in-all, given everything, I find little reason to keep the modern version in my rotation.
Woo-hoo! I've got a lot of vintage Williams from every era, but this one has really eluded me until today. Scored two 1976 boxes with the Americana Shaving Mug offer.
The vintage Colgate I tried seemed pretty bad ? It wasn't that old as it had a bar code on it, but it was a pretty bad soap, Maybe I need a much older version ?
maybe not. It might not work for you. Soaps are as subjective as razor blades. YMMV, rayburn and all that.
A lot of guys believe the newer Colgate Mug like you have isn't nearly as good as the older Colgate Cup because it was probably reformulated. I've got several pucks of each, but the Mug version I'm currently using works very, very well for me.
Williams works great for me. When I get up, the first thing I do is put enough water over the puck to cover it, then go on with my morning routine. When I'm ready to shave I pour out the water, soak my Muhle black synthetic, then shake off the water and start to swirl it in the mug of Williams. Once it starts to resist the swirling, I make a working lather in a plastic Rubbermade cup, adding a bit of water as needed. I found the key is to let the puck soak a few minutes first. If I get the mix just right, it's almost as slick as my jar of Tabac. My local Pathmark was selling it for $1.09, so I got one just to see what all the fuss was. Just last week the price had dropped to .99, so I bought two more. I notice the citrus scent only when it's dry. Once it's wet, it just smells like soap. Yeah, I like it fine.
