I guess we are lucky around here.. maybe it has to be with being in the South. I can always find those around here somewhere.. heck I even found some PAL SE blades at a local gas station the other day.. they carry them all the time apparently. Fuzzy
Yeeeaaahhhh...it is. On the other hand, $.50/blade is still better than Mach 3 cartridges. I just can't bring myself to drag blades from Dollar General against my pretty face, LOL.
I saw some blades at Rite Aid today for the same price. I never go into stores anymore except for the grocery store. Ordering off the interent ha proved time after time to be the best option for a wide variety of products. Im as cheap as the next guy, but I would rather pay that 5 dollars for shipping than spend the time, gas, and stress of going into a store.
Been using VDH for the last 2 shaves (my first 2 shaves after having learned how to lather, coincidentally) and have had nothing but delightful results. I'm still trying to get my technique down but the areas that are totally hair free are 100% BBS. Ahhhh, how nice it is!
Life is not about cheap. It is about value. I can play any guitar, but my bus is full of Fenders and Gibsons. I find them to be a great value. I've used the cheap soaps and creams. Found some of them to be respectable. And they will do in a pinch. But really. We are talking about YOUR FACE!. And you choose to skimp? I'll spend the money on myself. Rock on! St. Croix
One of the best "frugal" purchases I ever made, was to pay $75/year to become a "Prime" member of amazon.com. Prime membership entitles you to FREE 2-day shipping on anything stocked and sold by Amazon.com itself. Read that again; not just free shipping, free second day air shipping (!!). Another bonus is that everything you purchase, if it comes from out of state, is not charged sales tax. Which in California is a savings of 8.25 percent. And Amazon seems to always ship me my purchases from their warehouse in Fernley, Nevada. How convenient! I just took a quick glance on their website, and saw that these are some of the shaving products available for free 2-day shipping to Amazon "Prime" members: Van der Hagen soap Proraso soap Col Conk soap TOBS soap Tabac soap Provence sante soap Merkur blades Shark blades Wilkinson Sword blades Sharp blades Gillette 7AM blades TOBS cream Proraso cream Speick cream GFT cream Musgo Real cream Joe Bob Briggs and I say: check it out! Admission: I learned about Amazon Prime from SWMBO: TWB-GF
+1! While Williams and VDH represent the meatloaf and chili dogs of the shaving soap world. And it's not entirely untrue that there are many, many, fancier and better soaps on the market (i.e. the steaks and lobsters). Everyone knows that some days nothing will do but meatloaf and chili dogs. I had a Williams day today and will likely reach for VDH tomorrow morning.
I too love VDH and Williams. I get great results with williams if I soak the puck and lather right in the mug.
If there were a way to do a double blind comparison of VDH and other top-dollar soaps I am convinced VDH would beat or tie many of them.
And adding a touch of inexpensive RSC to the mix would help ensure a win! But many street-grade soaps appear to lose out in the olfactory department - something I fortunately don't pay much attention to while lathering up.
I figure whatever a person is happy with is good. If someone wants to spend less and they get a great shave that s good with me. Heck my budget is such that I need to look for deals. Although I might treat myself to upper end stuff once in awhile. Rick
