I'm having trouble getting a thick lather on my face.

I also sometimes use the VDH deluxe, but I found the puck is not wide enough to get a good load so I melted it into a short Mason jar with a wide base which allows me to get a lot of movement with the brush which helps me get a good load which then makes the lather munch better. Plus the Mason jar is easier to handle as well. Again I use the same brush

But you could also just use any container that is wide enough for you as well, I just like Mason jars

How long have you had your brush? I've had mine for about a month now, and I'd like to to be a little softer. I'm just not sure how long it takes for this brush to get broken in.

Just a few weeks. I lathered up it up at night and left it with some lathered over night like 4 times and the soap helped condition and soften it up a lot

Okay, thanks for letting me know this. I guess mine might be broken in by now?

It's worth noting I have a badger hair brush on the way now, so we'll see how that goes.

Not necessarily. Each brush (even by the same company and hair type) will have its individual break in period. And I took actions to help break it in so that may be why mine is soft already. But I'm sure it still has lots of breaking in to still do
