Yeah, mine is definitely missing that piece. Oh well, I can still load the blades manually and use it.

Check out what I got today :)

Really decent condition. A bit of brass showing in a few spot but I'm cool with that. Had a bit of a time getting the retainer thingy to move so had to use pliers. Even using them gently I left some tool marks on it but it is still good to go, just a few plier marks is all. Dark blue handle! Me likey :D

That is a very nice condition G4 Schick 66 that came out in 1948 I believe. The reason you had a hard time opening it and had to use pliers is because the G types weren't designed to be opened.

    Oh.

Well, I'm glad I did. Seeing what I saw under there was worth the risk! If I would've shaved with it having that crud and hair under there would've made me puke if I would have known.

It had been done before too, I saw the scratch mark from someone having done it previously, which made me think it was doable in the first place....noticed it on my gold G too and I did it to that one as well :ashamed001

Yeah, you'll see a lot of the G and E's that didn't have the blade compartment that opened with that scratch. I have a theory about that. I think that back in the day the guys that bought them to replace the early E types that did open missd that feature so they forced the newer ones to open so they could clean them like they were used to.

I know this theory may be as screwed up as a left handed football bat but I'm sticking with it.

I've opened up a number of the G types, and the later E types that you're not supposed to open, and gotten away with it. I did have a fair amount of trouble getting the spring tension right again on the last one, and even though it worked again, the spring was noticeably a bit bent.

There is a risk of permanent damage, and I don't think I'd do it a second time with any that I own now. At least the crud that's building up will be my own. It really makes you appreciate the E1s, though, that were designed to open easily for cleaning. Hard to say what made Schick go away from that design.

Yup. I won't really need to do it again since, as Sliv stated, it's my crud. I had no idea that they weren't supposed to.

Your theory is probably right Hoosier, me thinks.

    Coincidentally, it shaves wonderfully :)

Last year I tried an Ever Ready 1914 with pretty bad results. I more or less wrote off SE razors at that point and thought that SE fans were out of their collective minds. Now a year later, I was the lucky recipient of a well loved OC MicroMatic. My first shave was a bit rough, but I continued on and have learned the razor. In turn, I have received shaves that rival the best of my DE shaves. I have become a huge fan of the OCMM and find myself reaching for it more and more. It's not the prettiest, but it's a fine shaver. I have used this pic in my shave of the day post, but thought I would add it here.

Thanks for the pic...What do you mean, its not the prettiest?? From this pic it looks very hip to me...I've always thought the OCMM's were very cool looking machines...:) And this one appears to be well loved...Its the vintage razors whose previous owners have obviously avoided using that scare me...:D

Major +1 I opened my gold G and was fairly sickened by the, er, deposits. Granted, you probably don't want to do it all the time, but sometimes you just have to get all the old DNA out of your 'new' razor!:D

Have you tried a 1912? A pleasure to 'drive' and REAL easy to keep clean!:D

Took my newly acquired J3 Golden Injector for it's maiden voyage today, excellent shave with no cuts/weepers! I am impressed!! I also like the longer handle over my Type I Hydromagic.

My 5 new SEs that I was able to rescue from an unloving antique shop! Can't wait to test drive the chrome OCMM in the morning.

Pics please....Those are beautiful razors....I like the long handle to look at but when I shave with them I keep smacking the head on the faucet when I whip it down to rinse it off....Too beautiful a razor to be smacking on the faucet!! Just not used to the longer handle...:)
