The Carbons or Stainless? Either one is a winner...I love both but use the Stainless mostly because I'm lazy....}8^))
And they give me 7 to 10 shaves with no maintenance....The Blue Stars or other carbons, maybe 2 or 3 shaves and I have to dip in alcohol, dry and put a drop of baby oil on each side of the edge and keep the blade over night somewhere dry, After every shave.....BUT those 2 or 3 shaves are Steller....but the Stainlesses give such great shaves too that I've been using them pretty much exclusively for the last couple years...so easy...

But after this talk....I might need to break out some carbons and do a "shave-off".....anyone else with me?

You're on a roll - great photo as well. I'm guessing you're loving your new brushes and soaps. And 7 shaves on a single blade. Must be a personal record. :chores016:

Reading this report is making me want to shave a day earlier. :happy036:

Mine are stainless. I've never tried the carbon. It sounds like I need to.

Then I'm guessing this is a Peerless, too? It is the only heirloom SE I have so I am trying to find out all I can about it. Somewhere I have it in the back of my brain (from a post I read some time ago) that this was from a traveling kit and called the Triumph. Only recently did I notice the curved head on it. On the back it only says, "GEM." More importantly, it provides a nice shave. :happy036:

Thanks for any ID info. :happy088:

The SS feather SE blade is far superior, so much so that I don't use my carbon blades anymore.

Unfortunately the Feather won't fit in the Gem razor.

Impossible to say - "Peerless" was the name of the set, which was the 1912 razor with the fluted handle in the rectangular nickel plated metal box. The Triumph set had a low profile head, the same handle (or possibly a shorter version) in a thin metal case similar to a cigarette case.

Yeah, without the case I'm guessing from what you've said it could also be the Conqueror. Does the curved cap eliminate the Triumph? I wasn't sure what a "low profile" head meant (flat?)

Thanks for sharing your deep knowledge of 1912s (among others.) :thanks:

The end of the G series has been reached with today's shave with the G8. :happy036:

I've wondered why Appleby skipped the G7 in his classification of the Type G variants. I'm guessing to underscore the break in handle design which is what is most unique about the G8. I don't like the looks as much as the other handles but it is hands down the most comfortable to grip (and much of the design carried on in the Type I.) :happy088:

One nice benefit of shaving my way through the whole series was the chance to try different blade combinations since all the Type Gs share the same head. Granted, I used different creams throughout so the comparisons aren't strictly apples to apples but the differences were clear. YMMV and all that but in my book the Schicks were at the bottom of the heap. There was a clear gap between those and the Personnas which I found to be substantially better - both smoother and sharper - maybe even too sharp. I'm not quite sure where to put the Schick NOS Kronas. Probably next in line but the blade I used (and hard to know if this applies to all Kronas since it's my only experience) was smooth and felt good on the face but was clearly not sharp enough for a 2 day growth. The Schick NOS Plus Platinums performed really well. A great combination of smoothness and sharpness. However, with the G8 I tried out the modified Feather Professional Blade. Smooth and sharp and probably the best of the combinations. I did re-open a weeper despite my concerted effort to avoid doing so but I don't know that I can lay that on the blade. The modified Feather was definitely the sharpest and right up there with the Plus Plats on smoothness. :git:

So, with a smooth, smooth, smooth face I offer you the G8...

    T&H Ultimate Comfort PSO
    Castle Forbes Lavender Shave Cream
    T&H Wellington Super Badger
    Schick G8
    Modified Feather Professional Blade (1)
    Osma Alum Block
    AOS Lavender After Shave Balm

And some looks at the whole series...
