On the road and shaving faster than usual with my black handled early E2. Shaving daily for the first time in a very long time. One ATG pass two days ago, two passes - XTG, ATG - today. The fast shaves have been convenient but I'm picking up a weeper or two with my haste. The final result is still a smooth, smooth shave. :happy036:

    Cold water 3.gif

    Prep: Warm shower
    Blade: GEM Stainless PTFE
    Razor: GEM Featherweight
Brush: Artisan badger with hand-turned maple handle
Lather: Maggard's Orange Menthol shaving soap
Post: Witch hazel splash, Maggard's Orange Menthol, Nivea sensitive balm
    WTG, XTG

Woke up a little earlier than normal and therefore had more time to shave! Went with a full two pass shave and it was a good one. The Maggard's products are great. I was impressed with the quality of the soap and the moisturizing aspects of the after shave. The scent is really nice - not sweet or fake orange smell - more like orange rind and zest. Really nice.

The GEM Featherweight and PTFE blade were fantastic again today. I had almost 48 hours of beard growth and it mowed right through all of it in a smooth, comfortable fashion. Really enjoyable and fun razor.

I hope you all have a great Monday!

This morning shave was an easy shave. I used my Schick Type G, Semogue and Haslinger Schafmilch. A near perfect combination. No irritation...just smooth sailing. DFS for certain.

    Pre: Proraso white preshave cream
    Razor: Schick Type G
    Brush: Semogue 1305
    Soap: Haslinger Schafmilch
Post: Witch Hazel / RB Balm (Rusty Blade Balm) / Jack Black Post Shave Cooling Gel

This Semogue 1305 has to be one of my favourite boar brushes. When it is dry it feels like you could scrub a floor with it, but once it soaks in a mug of warm water while I shower, it softens up nicely. An absolute pleasure to use. I realize I don't have much of a system for using my brushes...I just tend to decide at the moment of picking up my soap and razor to go into the bathroom. And oddly enough, while I used a boar this morning, I have been selecting badger brushes more lately.

The RB Balm performed very well. It is not as thick as my previous 50/50 blend...and it is very slick.

Many people think that the idea of stropping these blades is to extend blade life - use it till it dulls, then strop it.

Many people are mistaken. If the blade is dull it is too late, as stropping (on an untreated strop) does not remove any metal. The blade should be stropped before each use, including the first use.

But don't take my word (or Billy's) for it. I have a Gem Junior set that is complete with the original directions, circa 1907. Here is a direct quote from those directions: "The cutting edge of any razor is greatly improved, however, by stropping before or after every shave."

I did end up closing the spring and applying pressure using a pliers on the spring, forcing the spring to tighten. This did fix the problem and it now shaves great. I guess I got lucky.

That is such a cool looking razor! Maybe I should add one of those to my collection. Maybe I shouldn't tell my wife about it too!

    J. A. Henckels Twinworks Rapide
    Henckels Rapide wedge blade (6)
    Plisson synthetic brush
    LA Shaving Soap Co. Blackfern
    Myrsol Agua de Limon

The blade provided with the Henckels Rapide is made of Solingen steel which takes a wicked edge. It is not particularly smooth, requiring a little extra care to avoid irritation, but it is crazy sharp when properly honed and stropped. A wild ride but the end result was a super-close shave.

You SHOULD get one. Is very handle-heavy because of the original design to hold the blades in the handle. But, they are cool looking, and the resulting, really smooth shave surprised me. And...what your wife doesn't know won't hurt you...uh...her. That's why I keep a balance in PayPal, it's "invisible".
