Good morning friends! This morning I had another excellent shave with the Shake Sharp, a razor that takes a standard DE blade but only exposes one edge at a time. Despite using a DE blade it shaves very much like an SE in that the proper angle is with the cap nearly flat on the face. I had a little difficulty holding this angle around my chin which resulted in a little bit of discomfort but everywhere else was flawless. I half expected the Personna to fail after having one full shave on this side of the blade previously but it worked flawlessly. Next shave I will flip the blade and have a brand new cutting surface! Have a great day everyone!

I've got a plan for this! One day when the Hipsters tire of their Lumberjack beards, we of the shave forums will be strategically placed to sell them vintage, Eco-friendly equipment. Of course keeping all the good stuff for ourselves.

Well I think I learned a valuable lesson yesterday in regard to pressure while honing. After taking my nice edge to the 1 Micron film i noticed that is was getting duller not sharper. Looking at the edge in sunlight I could see faint sparkles off the edge and I think I either over honed it or was using way too much pressure and created a wire edge. So I have a few questions for all of you that hone these hollow ground SE blade.

Do you tape the spine and if so how many layers (I was using two layers of 3M Super 33) ?

Or do you hone the blade while its in the stropping handle (this seems like it would create a bevel that is too steep)?

After you set the bevel how many strokes on each side do you do at each progression ?

How would you describe the amount of pressure you put on the blade if any ?

I'm fairly certain that I got a good bevel set but I think I killed it more and more as I worked up the progression as it actually felt the sharpest off the 5 Micron film

Well My French Hoes came in today. And unfortunately it doesn't seem like they are going to be usable:

It seems like there is something missing from this razor, a blade tray perhaps ? This razor does not hold the blade securly or evenly as you can see in the first pic

I don't know if the little tab is supposed to be bent forward like that but it will not allow the blade to slide all the way forward to the stops.

On the plus side is seems like the blades are in decent shape and should be able to be cleaned up

Don't Know Much about that SE..It Looks Fine from Here..I Know there is an Adjustment Feature on them...Summon @Darkbulb for the Intel..I Know he has One..See this Thread & Video on Adjustment Mechanism..;)

I Use a Very Light Pressure on the Bevel Setting 15 Micron until the Bevel is Set...I Will Do a Further 40 Circle Method Either Side & 40 Cross Stroke Sets..I Go onto the 12 Micron I Do 40 Circle Method with the Same Light Pressure & 40 Cross Stroke Sets...I Will Repeat that Whole Set Again with Zero Pressure..I Will use Zero pressure from there On in through the Progression..:)

After Coming Off the 12 Micron I will Do 40 Circle Method Either Side & 40 Cross Stroke Sets Once with No pressure & the Same Until I get to the 3 & 1 Micron & I will Just Do 40 Cross Stroke Sets Once & that's it...In Fact on the Final 1 Micron 20 Sets can be enough for me..:D

That's Why I mentioned this Last Night...Less is More..All the Magic Happens on the Bevel Setting Hone..The Rest is Just a Matter of Finer Sharpening & Polishing...The Blade is Honed Flat on the Hone...One Layer of Tape or No Tape..I personnaly Use Cello Tape because its Thinner & ger the Blade as Flat on the Hone as I Can Get it while using a Taping Method...:p

That's the System & Sets I Use..Give or Take..There are Many Systems..Its a Sorta Pressure of No pressure that has to learned..I Suspected You had Wnt for you're Life with you're Previous Post.. :angelic007:

I saw that thread, but it seems the blade retention portion on mine is different. I am almost thinking mine was meant to use a modern style SE blade instead of a hollow ground.

The Best Advice I Can Offer is to Find Someone on YouTube that You Can Connect With..If they are Full of Technical Jargon Dump them..Cause they Just Mystify Something that is Simple..You Need a System to get a Foundation..Honing is a Discipline & You Need a System to Discipline Yourself in My Humble Opinion to Go Onto Experiment & Be Free..But it Will Always Remain a Discipline..;)

I Am in Tune with the Blade & the Hone these Days..The Blade Talks..The Hone Talks..I have to Listen..People either have Listening Skills or They Don't..In My Experience in Teaching Martial Arts..This Cant be Taught..You Either have it or You Don't..A Finished Blade is an Expression of Me..:D

All the Work & Magic Happens on the Bevel Hone..If there is a Secret..That's It..That is the Key that Opens the Door for the Honing Progression..The Honing Does Not Even Begin Until You have Restored the Edge..That's it..:)

By the Way..I Got Some 15 Micron Diamond Film for Setting the Bevel..It Cuts a Lot Faster than Chromium Oxide Film..That Said..Its Great for that Job but I will be using Chromium Oxide Film for the progression because its a Far Smoother Cutter & has Far More Cushion than Diamond Film..:p

Well I managed to figure out something on the unknown French hoe. The little tab actually rotates. You can flip it back load the blade and then flip it forward and it holds the blade in place. Looks like this one will be usable

I use the a stropping handle, usually the one from my Henckels Rapide because it is quite strong and solid. This may not produce the ideal angle, but judging from the wear on some of my stroppers, this is how it was done back in the day.

Besides, I have a spreadsheet that I found somewhere that calculates bevel angle. With most blades it is 18-19 degrees. I won't use the handle if it's over 20.0 degrees.

I use moderate pressure on the DMT's because my primary purpose with them is to remove bad stuff (nicks, rolled edges, etc.).

I set the bevel on the 12 micron film. This typically takes 200-400 laps. I start with light pressure and after the first 100 laps or so decrease the pressure to almost nothing.

I then do 100 laps each on 9, 3, and 1 micron film, and finish up with 50 laps on .3 micron film with a sheet of 20# copy paper under the film.

I do only back & forth laps - I've never tried circular strokes.

I don't put much stock in hanging hair tests, tree-topping, shaving arm hair, etc. I can shave arm hair with my pocket knife and I wouldn't dream of trying to shave with it. Instead, I look at the blade with an inexpensive digital microscope and when it looks good I put it in a razor and give it a shot.

I don't claim to have the slightest idea what I'm doing, but I'm mostly happy with the shaves I'm getting, which is all that really matters to me.

I have a "Le Sport" razor that appears to be identical to your Tip-Top razor except for the markings.

It appears that these razors take a proprietary blade that is made of flat steel, is longer and narrower than a standard blade, and has two holes in it.

A shame, because it appears that this razor was adjustable.

Buying these razors is really a crap shoot. I have this one, one with a broken blade retainer spring, and one that is bent beyond repair. Of course, I also have a half-dozen really nice razors.

Well in the end it was $10 I think and the blade is usable.

Todays planned shave was going to be with an ER 1914, but tempted by this one on the Shelf. As was hand loaded
and not too sure whether it is secure in stops, will shave with caution. It does look nice though- Schick B1.
