The General from Colonial Razors

The General is the lastest entry into the Artist Club razor category - a category that is getting crowded! It is made entirely of aluminum alloy and bears a striking resemblance to the ATT SE1. This is a coincidence since the first prototype was displayed on the creator's Facebook page months before the SE1. Closer inspection reveals several differences. The blade is held in place by pins rather than tabs, there is no ridge on the back of the base plate and the guard is different. The blade gap appears to be larger, although I have not yet measured. it.



It weighs in at a mere 1.5 ounces, lighter than an Alumigoose 2 (1.8 ounces) but heavier than most injectors. It has a standard thread so aftermarket handles may be used.

The blade loads easily like other razors of this type. I started with a Feather AC Professional since this blade works well for me in my Cobra Classic and SE1.

The lack of weight in the razor means that a bit of pressure is necessary, similar to an injector. Finding the best blade angle was easy and intuitive. The safety guard extends in front of the guard enough that too steep an angle simply results in the razor not cutting very well, as opposed to scraping and irritating. However, there is enough blade exposure and blade gap that my impression after one shave was of a razor that is considerably more aggressive than the Alumigoose 2, and perhaps slightly more aggressive than the SE1.

However it is still exceptionally smooth, and I enjoyed an excellent BBS shave free of weepers and irritation. Unlike the Alumigoose 2 I feel no need to go to the Pro Super blade, and in fact am looking forward to trying it with a Pro Guard and Kai Captain.

The General sells for a mere $59, making it a great way to try the AC blades without breaking the bank. Actually it stands up quite well against its more expensive counterparts.

The first batch had a few cosmetic issues and Colonial Razors is selling them at a discounted price of $49 (if there are any left). I've been all over mine with a magnifying glass and have yet to find any flaws.

I have both razors, and use Feather Pro Supers on them both. The blade gap is microscopically greater on The General, but the blade exposure is the same.
I think I get a better shave from The General, but I don't like the handle and have replaced it with a shorter and heavier one.
I'm curious about the Scottish Claymore, and I'm okay with the $98 cost, but I'm too damn cheap to pay the $25 shipping.

 

If you're ordering the Claymore from the USA you don't have to pay the VAT. This knocks $16 off the price and brings the total including shipping to around $106.

I just learned about the Claymore moments ago and now I'm considering one.

Like I need another razor!

You have a lot more razors than I do. I tend to get rid of what I do not use, so I'm presently down to four; a Schick E type, Pal Adjustable, ATT SE1, & The General.
If I got a Claymore, I'd likely sell the ATT SE1. I like that the Claymore's tabs go all the way through the baseplate, just like the B3 Mongoose, and unlike the SE1.

 

I looked at the Claymore's website (executiveshaving.co.uk), and between the pictures and the weights and measures, I decided, for the time being, not to buy. Here's why: The Claymore weighs in at 143g and has a 95mm handle, the ATT SE1 Bamboo at 108g with an 87mm handle, and The General at 45g with an 88mm handle. My favorite handle (which I'm using on The General) is 76mm long and weighs 44g. Also the pictures of the gap and exposure on the Claymore lead me to expect it to be both heavier and less aggressive than the SE-1. That's not a combination I favor, so unless I find out otherwise, I will probably not buy the Claymore. I may sell the SE-1 though, since I get better shaves from The General, and I see no need for both.
I'll decide after tomorrow morning's shave.

 

Hi folks, I have a question about my 1912 Ever Ready, and my 1912 Gem. I was going through my SE razors, thinking about some participation in SEptember, and I discovered my two razors mentioned above are exactly identical. Here's some photos-




We're these two razors made by the same company? Was gem and Ever Ready once combined under the same corporate roof? Forgive me if this question has been answered before. I am just curious. Thanks in advance for any response.

Nice shave with the PAL. Thanks to @Karl G for the pass-around opportunity! With more time and experience I can see how this razor would provide extremely close shaves with little effort. I can also see why there are so many fans!

A most excellent shave this morning with the PAL Adj.. Wonderful lather from the tried and true Proraso Green shave cream. Three passes and I am dolphin smooth and refreshed. Have a great day friends.

 

Starting tomorrow, I will be partying with the SE and Injector crew for the month of SEptember. I made a special razor stand to aid me. I have six razors in the line up. I will use them in order and repeat five times. It should be fun. From left to right: Bunny V-3 injector, Schick L-1 injector, my Dad's Schick E-3 injector, Schick C-3 Repeating Razor, GEM 1912, and GEM G-Bar.

 

In Short..Yes..They were the ASR..American Safety Razor Company...Which was an Amalgamation of these Companies & Others..

Battle of the Artist Club SE Razors:

This was the third contest between these two razors, although in truth it could have been settled in two, but I wanted to bend over backwards to be fair.
The objective was the smoothest closest shave that I could get, in just one pass, with the grain - mostly. The General won, hands down, three out of three.
It saddened me a little, as I had high hopes for the SE-1. They are both mild razors, that need a Feather A. C. Pro Super blade to give me a good clean shave.
I tried them both with a Feather A. C. Pro, but I needed two passes to achieve the same results that I got in just one pass with the A. C. Pro Super.
So today, with some sadness, I put the ATT SE-1 Bamboo up for sale on eBay. The General (with a Durham-Duplex handle) just gives me better shaves.

 

Oh boy oh boy oh boy! Tomorrow is SEptember and I'm finally going to use my new Feather Valet Autostrop blades. Now, which one do I use first?
