Ah. Yeah, sounds like you need to rotate the blade holder portion one more time and ease up on the thumbscrew. They are counter threaded, so tightening one has no effect on the other.

    Thanks, I'll try that.

    This from IBC:
"Due to the thumbscrew being closer to the front end of the blade holder when a Feather is used as opposed to directly in the middle with a DE and small injector blade, a little more care must be taken when loading the Feather blade.

Also if the blade holder is not pushed far enough away from the body when rotating the thumbscrew counterclockwise to load a blade, the blade can get pinched and knocked off position when you try to secure the blade. Even slightly knocked out of position the blade will be uneven. "

Worst case - if it is defective - they have a good return policy :)

Thank you! I think that's exactly what happened.

a family member is looking for an "entry into straights" ... and while this isn't a true straight razor, i think it gets him in the ballpark and at a nice pricepoint. plus, i've heard LOTS of nice things about the IBC.

i need some help on blades, though, and am looking for some very specific links and/or descriptions. as i understand the razor, it'll take a broken DE, an injector, or an 'artist club'. being fairly new to DE, the DE is the only one of the three with which i have experience. i'd like to get some of the other two, though, as a sampler to go along with the razor.

any and all help is much appreciated ... !!!

tryablade has artist club and shavette blades that are pre broken. I don't think he has injector blades but amazon can get you both brands of new production injector blade. He offers samplers of artist club, DE and shavette blades.

West coast shaving has Injector/mini hair shaper blades.

    They also have Feather blades.

I would recommend the artist club professional or professional super blades.
3rd and 4th results on that page.

You don't need to buy pre-broken DE blades. It's easy enough to snap DE blades in the wrapper, and this razor has relief cuts to accommodate the bent edges of the snapped off portion of the blade.

@Darkbulb you might want to change the thread title, it's Irving, not Irvine.

You done playing with the One Blade yet, @Darkbulb, where's your IBC review?

Yeah pretty much. Decided I like it so no need to use the 30 day MBG.

The next razor up is the IBC. Should be interesting.

Spent 15 minutes trying to get a Feather Pro blade to line up correctly and failing in doing so. It's always a bit unevenly aligned.
The small screw also feels very 'finicky' when screwing it back in and more often than not it gets slightly tilted and won't screw in fully and I have to unscrew it again.
I think I've used enough razors to not have to read a manual to load a blade but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

Was looking forward to taking it on its maiden voyage this morning but in sheer frustration it's back in its box until I'll try again in some time.

Throw an Injector blade in there.

Edit: the screw get 'tilted?' I don't think that should be happening.

Well, as it turns out I'm an idiot. I still blame too much alcoholic beverages and fatty food this week - and I will try to extend that excuse into next week...

The blade loads easily and evenly and took...cough-cough 5 seconds to do....

So...after that embarrassing start on the day I'm off to shave :D

Finally had my first shave with the Irving Barber Co (IBC) shavette this afternoon.
After some blond moments earlier on I found the blade loading mechanism very easy to use and it loaded the - in this case a Feather Pro - blade in even and securely.

This is one beautiful piece of shaving gear but as you start interacting with it you notice that nothing is there just because of the looks - it all has a function and it functions very, very well. The biggest concern people might have when looking at this razor may well be the 'wheel' on it that is used to open and close the blade holder. I found that during the shave it completely 'disappears' and does not in any way interfere with your shave.

Here's a photo with the blade holder taken off the razor to show how the Feather Pro fits. Did I mention there is a magnet inside it that helps hold the blade in place when you close it? Very, very neat.

Popped the holder in place and headed off to the den...
Lathered up some Klar Kabinett with one of those wonderful New Forest brushes and started shaving.
Now, full disclaimer, I am rather terrible at straight razor shaving. I'm slow and I so far only feel comfortable shaving my neck, chin and cheeks - and only in WTG.
I normally finish with a DE/SE razor under the nose/around the mouth and then a complete ATG pass.
So that's what I set out to do with the IBC shavette as well.

I have used a Shavette in the past and really, really hated it (diaf Sanguine) and found regular straight to be much more forgiving and 'smoother' so I did approach this venture with a bit of apprehension.

First impressions of the WTG pass:

    Left cheek and throat:
Wow, very smooth. Easy to find the right angle. Very comfortable handle.
I am moving rather slowly. The two days worth of stubble is no match to this razor and every stroke leaves my cheek and throat smooth.

    Right cheek and throat:
This is my trouble-side. I insist on using the same hand (right) for this side and it always feels awkward.
Harder to find the right angle. Still shaves really well. This is eas.... ouch
Delusional confidence coupled with shaving a side of my face that is always awkward for me led me to plant the blade in my face.
Using well tested home treatment of toilet paper and cursing the bloodletting soon ended.
I was about 80% done with what I had set out to accomplish today so I decided to wrap it up with something..fool-proof so I brought out the Gillette blue tip and cleaned up what was left.

    Initial impression summary:
Beautiful razor that is easy - and fun - to use. Capable of producing some very, very close and comfortable shaves - but won't, of course, save you from yourself :)

Can't wait to take it out again for a spin after my face has healed a bit (which again was my fault..not the razor's).

You really need to learn to switch hands DB. It makes a difference. :)
