Is it just me or do barbers take off more hair than the agreed upon amount?

Actually it's $45 here (Denmark), that's a normal price. The more fashionable barbers charge around $70. But that's just for the name of it. There are also the cheaper ones, like the one I tried once but my experience with that one and the rumors on the others aint good...

I totally agree. One inch is one inch as the customer ordered. If you wanted two, I'm pretty sure you'd have ordered it :) At least that's how I have it.

I think $45 is what my mom pays for her haircut and hair coloring.

But the cost of living is way higher in Denmark and most other places in Europe, so I'm not really surprised that $40 is the norm there.

That is a lot of money for a haircut, but it sounds like it is just part of the culture there. Things are different in the US.

Everything is just expensive here :-D Sad, but true :-( If a lady wants a cut with color, $150 is very easily spent, often more. It's ridiculous expensive if you ask me. Many tend to color at home instead, due to the cost.

But what I was getting at is, that here you get what you pay for. I would assume it's the same in the US, so if one often get bad cuts, maybe the barber is just on the cheap side and it could prove fertile to attend a slightly more expensive one?

Or are they generally just not up for the job?

It seems like here, at least where I am, the barbers are minimally trained and learn most of the craft on the job. You really have to hunt to find a good barber. I guess the profession doesn't really attract the highest quality here.

I'll be sure to tell my mom that if she ever complains on my presence.

But I agree, to me that's robbery.

My GF just had a cut plus extensions installed (to get longer, more fuller hair). She payed $550. Good God we don't have a shared expense account :D

More or less, this is what I am realizing. You probably do get what you pay for and I am not looking to spend more than $20 dollars (which is probably a lot as compared to the rest of the nation, but average for my location, northern Virginia). So, if I want a better haircut, I should look elsewhere and expect to spend a little more. I may end up doing this next time because I only get a haircut every few months.

In my experience, the crappy cuts I got came from women and that one Iraq vet I mentioned earlier.

No offense to women stylists, but it doesn't seem like they knew how to cut short hair. Like they couldn't fade without making it look like a bowl, didn't know how to even sideburns, or did a bad job at lining me up.

Holy hell, that is freaking ridiculous.

I know what you mean, but I never really cared that much when I was in the military because it would grow out and I would have to get a haircut the next week anyway. At least, that was how it was in the Marines. Fortunately, military cuts were always discounted and only cost around $10 (half that amount if on base). You do learn who to avoid though. That would be another example of someone who doesn't care or is just that incompetent.

It gets sadder... That was a midprice because she didn't get the longer extentions, but settled on a mid-length. The longest length the shop had would have ended in $1000 more or less. I saw the price list and my jaw just dropped.. shook my head and went to my Den for a nourishing shave for the mind :angelic007:

Interestingly, I've never had a good cut from a stylist or a male barber. Female barbers, however, have done great jobs. I guess they just care how you look. lol.

Wow... I hope she has a good paying job. That is just too much for fake hair. Real hair too for that matter.

Ha, the last female barber I went to was when I was 17. She gave me a mullet and I told her to shave it off. She had to go to a number 3 and then made it out to look like a bowl. She then proceeded to cut my sideburns all jagged and uneven. I wanted to take the clippers and shave her head for doing such a bad job. But my mom was with me and I didn't want to get smacked upside the head.

It's real hair, but it's still a lot if you ask me.

I'm in the army national guard. When I was on active duty, all that mattered was that our necks didn't look sloppy, it had to be tapered, and no hair was touching our ears. The top just had to be neat and conservative.

And women think we spend too much on grooming.

I went to my barber today and mentioned this to her.....she said my original statement was correct. She tries to incorporate your wishes and then has to make it look right.
Her first question to every customer is "How would you like your hair cut" I laughed and said "The Usual" then I said how do you remember everyone cut? She laughed and said that is her job to remember!!

As I tell her when she "complains" - "Honey, at least it keeps me off the street.." That usually silences her :D But still, we don't have shared accounts so it's all in good vibes. We couldn't care less what the other part spends his/hers money on, as long as there's food on the table and our daughter get what she needs (and not necessarily wants) :)

That may have been your experience......with female barbers! I on the otherhand have an excellent female barber she is the first one I have ever been to.... almost 13 years. Always has a line waiting to get their hair cut......I am sure this is not the norm but she is good and not bad to look at as well!!

Hmmm.... how long have you been misreading "barber school" as "barber shop"? :D

On the other side of things, I went to school with a guy who would only allow gay men to cut his hair. The theory was that they wanted him to look as hot as possible. Yeesh.

That is true for a lot of the women (and men) in the unisex styling salons, but I have seen women barbers give very good haircuts. One was good enough that my own barber once remarked "she is very good at cutting hair". That is no small praise coming from a top-notch barber with 50 years experience. I have only had two barbers for most of my life, both very old-school tonsorial masters in traditional barber shops.

So to answer the original question, some barbers do take off more hair than the agreed upon amount, while others do not. Just as in other professions, there are some barbers who are better than others.
