The same blade that glides with the Weck becomes a chattering mess in this thing. After two passes, I could still feel copious amounts of stubble laughing at me. The stubble actually grabbed the Dovo on the way by, gave it a wedgie, got it in a headlock and kicked it in the nuts. The Dovo got in a toe stomp but that's about it. The thing is so light that trying to shave effectively with it feels akin to trying to get Andre The Giant drunk with a thimble of vodka. You might get him there eventually, but the game is so wearying that it loses all joy or meaning. Rescued the blade, put it in the Weck, and gave the Jeeves the partner it deserved, finishing things off in one quick pass.

Well, we know the new version of the Gillette Blue Blades is a winner. It produced three very fine shaves over three days in the Slim. But, not only can you buy the blades you can buy the razor as well - with a blade included. This thing looks like the Rapira razor that I've often semi-demonized. They're cheap plastic handled razors with cheap metal heads. The Rapira version produces a slightly scary "flat" angle on the blade. I'm wondering how closely related they are. They are definitely extremely similar. The Gillette on top, the Rapira on bottom.

The angle of the pictures makes the Rapira look longer but they are virtually the same length. Notic, though, the different look on the heads. It's very obvious when holding them. The Gillette head looks like it's thinner metal. This can't be a good thing as the Rapira barely uses metal to start with. I could tell a weight difference in my hand so off to the scales we go. The Gillette weighs 18 grams. 11 of those grams are the head. The Rapira weighs a whopping 29 grams with 17 in the head. The Rapira handle appears to be solid plastic while the Gillette handle is hollow. Less weight in the head and handle for the Gillette. No wonder it feels so light. Holding both by the end of the handle and letting them fall off center it's a world of difference. The Gillette is just so light while the Rapira does feel like it's "head heavy".

So, nothing left to do but try the shave. I loaded the Gillette and they load the same. Four tabs on the corners of the cap lock the blade into place. Arko and The Canuck for the perfect lather. I took about three strokes and knew I had to change technique. It seemed I didn't have the angle right. I adjusted a bit and found what seemed better but still got lousy results. I was trying to let the razor do the work. Stupid me. We're talking 18 grams. I added pressure and finally got to seeing some results. It's never good when a razor requires pressure. I finished the first pass and relathered, noticing how much I had left to go before being done. The second pass I got more aggressive with. More pressure, held the angle well and not only did I not get a good enough result, I was thinking I might need more than three passes. Lathered again, went for the third pass with full ATG and then some Gillette slides on the neck to finish at - a rather mediocre DFS. We know the blade works, and yes, I did complete a shave without hurting myself, but this was disappointing.

It seems like this razor is just plain too lightweight to produce a great shave unless you want to go four passes with lots of pressure. I did the alum check and found it pretty warm. Worse than the blade produced in three nights in the Slim. Too much work to get a decent shave and the quality went off as well. That concerns me. Imagine a newbie seeing this in a store and deciding to join our ranks. He unpacks it, loads it, and has no idea what he's doing. All he knows is it isn't cutting as well as his carts and he has no way of adjusting. Then, if he does manage a finish close to mine he's suffered irritation beyond what he is used to as well, even with carts. His response? He keeps overspending and getting mediocre shaves with his way too expensive carts. Not a good scenario.

At some point I'll throw this up against the Rapira side by side, just to satisfy my curiosity. Thanks to @John Ruschmeyer for sending me this razor and the blades. Always fun to try new stuff and see what's out there. My final grade for this round of trial - for the blade I have to give it an "A". I had three great shaves in the trial razor and finished BBS all three times. No blood and only slightly warm spots with the alum on the last two shaves. For the razor? "D-". It did eventually produce a shave so it isn't a total loss. I suppose it could make a camping razor that you wouldn't care if it accidentally fell in the fire while shaving.

Tomorrow I move on to some blades sent to my by @Linuxguile for trials. The fun continues!

View attachment 183661 The head shave was wonderful, clean and smooth. The Fatip with a new Polsilver blade didn't let me down, 3 great passes. It was the first time I let the gord grow for 2 days, no issues.

Now the face was a different story. Using my shavette the first pass was close and smooth, unlike any first pass before. The second pass I got the left side of my chin to close. This spot has been rough the whole time using an open blade. Can't seem to get my arm contorted, twisted, or whatever it takes to get the gental coverage like the other side. Now for the neck, the right side is close as a 3 pass shave with a R41/Feather smoth and nice. The left side, different story. Seems I need to get my left or right arm set to manuver the blade while I streatch the skin. I left some hot spots on my neck trying to get the left side as close and smooth as the right side. Nothing that leaked, but still, there they are.
So now that I seem to be able to wield this blade without serious injury, getting a close smooth 2 pass shave is now on the agenda, today was not it.
Seems that a two pass shavette is as close or almost as close as a 3 pass DE/SE, at least it is to me.
Can't wait till I can good 3 pass with this little tool.
The plan is to do the left side first, then go to the right side. Might be less strugle and not as long into the aerobics work out.

Wonderful relaxing shave today after a long hot shower. Two passes with minor cleanup and my face is smooth and refreshed. DK Prototype, my first DK, felt great in the hand and the TGN knot is 'muy' primo. MDC is disappearing fast, hard to say how many shaves are left. I'm using my "lather monster" brushes and sticking with this soap to the Finish Line. Great shaves today brothers!

Good morning everyone! After last night's headshave, I was psyched going into my morning shave with my Dovo shavette. I went back to the long blade to see if this blade will be spent on the 5th shave. I was correct. I shaved with this blade and the toe end was dull, but the heel end was fine. I attribute this to leaning toward the toe end when I shave and was the reason why I got more than normal nicks in my shave no. 7. Therefore, I had to be a little more creative in manipulating the shavette by shaving heel side for the entire shave. It was kind of strange for me to shave that way. However, the good news! I was able to get a BBS shave with 2 passes and 1 weeper. I attribute the weeper to shaving entirely on the heel of the blade which is out of my comfort zone. Therefore, here is my grade for today's shave.

Result 97 = A+

PS I tossed the Dovo long blade, so it is only good for 5 shaves.

I'm not sure what to do for tomorrow's shave. The IBC will remain on the countertop ready to go should I decide to use it.

Holding the razor for a downward pass is fairly intuitive. It's the ATG pass that is baffling me.
I simply cannot figure out how to hold the razor, without using my opposite hand. I guess that's ok...
Two passes with the Portland and I wasn't even close to a DFS.
I can hear the blade, but the results are not yet to my standards.
I will be patient, understanding that this is going to take some serious practice.
At least I can report that I had no cuts or nicks or irritation. I am also able to report that keeping the
shallow angle isn't posing great difficulty. Now, I have never come around the chin and don't know when that'll
occur. Nor have I ever shaved my upper lip. Ditto on the ETA of that.
So you could say I am really only shaving the flatest parts of my face.
Cleaned up the shave with the '56 Super-Speed and the now-binned Nacet blade.

If been using my 1958 (D3) Gillette Executive all month. Historically I've always used 5-6 or maybe 7 for the setting and had acceptable shaves. But, since the rest of you are using str8's or shavettes I thought I'd "kick it up a notch". I moved the setting to 8 and, much to my amazement, the shave was actually smoother and more comfortable while being closer at the same time. I'm thinking a slight change in blade angle happened with the higher setting, but I like it! Gonna give 9 a try soon! After all it can only get better, right?

Since reading @jtspartan report on Colonia soap and aftershave, I decided to change out my normal Sunday MdC routine to give the new Colonia soap and aftershave a try this morning. The "Weapon Jr" loaded and lathered the soap with ease. Without overloading I enough lather for 5 passes. I really couldn't tell a difference in loading and lathering between the Colonia and my Felce 4.3. Three passes and touch ups along the jawline ended in a near perfect shave. I did place the razor against my face too hard twice and ended up with two minor nicks. Completely my fault. The Colonia aftershave is a perfect match in scent to the soap. I added 2 drops of Glycerin per oz to the aftershave. I do this with all my aftershaves. I didn't find the post shave feel drying. However, I don't think the post shave feel is up to the level of the Felce 4.3. I don't have the ADP Colonia so I can't comment on how the scent compares but I can say this scent is a winner. Even the wife commented positively on the scent. I hope everyone has a great Sunday.

2nd shave today! Such an improvement already. I got a much better lather today. Possibly due to the new bowl. Less pressure helped a ton and I tried staying conscious of angle. Some neck oozing and irritation but much less. I had some tiny skin tags that may have caused some of the problem. Also I learned alum tastes awful. Dawn dish soap worked great defunking my brush along with 3 shampoos. Thanks everyone for the great tips I'm happy I had some improvement. Now the hard part is waiting for it to grow so I can shave again

Excellent results Rob. The lather will get better as the brush breaks in. Take care of your boar and it will take care of you. You have a really good setup there and you will know what I'm talking about after 30 days . Keep up the great work my friend .

What is your New Year shaving related resolution?

I'm going to do the hardest of all - a No-Buy '19

I'm going to try shaving with straight razors (pain sticks included)

I'm going to reduce the number of soaps in my den

I'm going to buy everything in sight and build an addition to hold it all!!

I'm going to shave. Simple, right?
