We should ask the guys here which soaps are "easiest" for newbies to lather well.

Though its lemony fresh scent is polarizing (like Ivory on steroids), Arko is basically foolproof.

I'd like to hear other's opinions on this topic of good newbie soaps, regardless of price.

Thanks Terry. Kung Fu, Hong Kong Phooey, or even the Hokey Pokey will get 'ya there. ;)

All the kids say hello! How is your daughter doing? I hope she's fully recovered. I can't wait to see some grand baby photos. :)

Thanks, Chris. I'm going to keep at it. I'll probably stick with a single pass with the shavette on work days.

No shame in that game! Shavette is tedious, and if you're hurried or distracted, absolutely ok to finish touch-up or pass two with a safety razor.

I have been intrigued with Stirling Soaps. I will have to wait until later in the year because I have 1 1/2 pucks of Williams and almost a full puck of VDH. I like to clear these soaps before I get a new supply.

Arko is great, although the scent is not for everybody. I'd possibly share that one as an option down the road. I'd steer a newbie toward Kiss My Face or C.O. Bigelow cream first. Both are inexpensive, super easy to face lather, great performers, and are available locally.

Very nice shave and photo, Jason! Hope your daughter is feeling better.

Ozark Mountain by Stirling? That's a fantastic scent. The aftershave is mighty strong. How is your deck project going?

    Monday evening January 14

Schick E4 / some kind of injector blade with some number of shaves on it
    Simpsons CH2 Chubby Synthetic Bristles
    Fendrihan Lavender Sandalwood soap sample
    TSD Lavender Milk Aftershave

Today I grabbed my Schick already loaded with whatever was in it. Worked on the Fendrihan soap sample a bit more. Little by little it is disappearing... Two passes to a good shave. No need to test with the alum.

Hope everyone had a good Monday.

Good call, Charlie. I think a newbie and a shave stick isn't a great idea. Lathering a shave stick takes some skill and some trial and error as far as water detection and addition, etc. C.O. Bigelow is a great choice. The Proraso soaps work well and lather easily. Van der Hagen is a great newbie soap as well.

Every one is getting along great here now that things have setteled down a bit. The kids are doing fine and I'm gonna take some time off to watch the 2 boys when the new one gets "out".
Hope your cool kids get along great too. I don't post pictures of the grandkids unless my daughter OK's it.
    So far... well....no.
    Sorry.
    Thanks a million.

I have only used 3 brands, Williams, Rockwell and VanDerHagen. VanderHagen would be my recommendation because it is relatively inexpensive, nice fragrance and lathers easily.

I started out using creams, very good but took a long time for me to get right being new. Then I tried hard soaps, worked well but with my water supply it still took lots of time to get it right.
Then I tried some Paraso and Stirling, then PAA. These three worked well with my hard water and I have migrated to them. I use a badger brush and I face or skin lather as opposed to using a mug. I thinks if you just practice with any soap, if it's OK stuff, it will work out. You can find your favorite later, when you get your shaving right.
