Don't be nuts....As if shaving with a blade pinched between two sticks didn't already qualify us for the rubber room.
Interesting fact. Picked my razor up to put it in a place of honor and the blade is very loose on it now. I'm thinking that once it got wet and then dried the wood shrunk away from the staples to allow it to wobble in there pretty nicely. So without repair work, these are definitely disposable after one use! Some who taped the sticks together may not have the same problem.
I'm thinking a line of super glue with a couple of staples to hold it while it sets up is the way to go. Not that I'll be doing it again.
Success on the first try makes it so anticlimactic. Now, if we were all bleeding right now then two more shaves would be called for! Just to see if we could do it!
“Vincent, how MANY TIMES have I told you, Would you jump off a cliff if ALL your friends did it too?!! Or worse, what if they were to staple two popsicle sticks and a razor blade…” Obviously she didn't warn me enough times. Hot Shower - Cold Water Shave Razor: 30 Day Crew Deluxe Razor Blade: GEM Stainless PTFE Soap: Route 66 The Black Pearl Brush: Omega 48 Witch Hazel Myrsol Red (it'll go great with the eventual skin color and loss of bodily fluid) Two-day growth, three-pass shave - WTG, XTG, ATG Approached this with such trepidation. The fine motor skills of this 60 year-old are not like they were 40 years ago or even 5. And as some of you know, I've been cursed in my senior years with Essential Tremor, so I'll never work with straights. My wife was shocked enough when I told her I was taking up safety razors. (she must have forgotten about that life insurance policy) Anyway, no way was I gonna do this when the idea first got hatched. Especially knowing today was get-away day for another business trip and the usual dashing out the house. But the idea grew on me as I found myself reaching for popsicles on the 4th. Then went up and took the spine off a GEM SE blade. (I figured the thicker the blade, the less chance for it to dance across my face.) And finally, just as the 30DC sprouts new ideas, it's also responsible for words of wisdom like - "Whats the worst that could happen?" So off I go. In short, the words of my master @Bama Samurai just played through my head - "Ride the Cap Luke" I'm no master, but I went through with just the WTG pass, survived with just one minor nick, cleaned up with my Personna Floating Head (thanks again Bama!) and claimed success. I know nothing really happens here if there's no pics, so here you go. Thanks to the 30 Day Crew for continuing to push the envelope of sane choices. Cheers! RT
Ok I LOVE this!!! A single edge entry and fantastic write up with video! Awesome Vincent and great to have you join the cool kids.....though you're already one of the coolest on the block. Now......as far as that word "sane"........well, might not exactly fit. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using Tapatalk
OK, @Rufus T. You are my Hero! Not only did you do the pop-sickle stick shave but you did what no one else did, you videoed part of your shave and posted it! In my book at this time Rufus T. is the winner of this challenge and as much as I hate to do this second place to Mr. Freeze93 for his corn-dog stick razor!
@Drygulch @NCoxSTL @BearCWY I am done. We are seven for seven. Will write up in a bit, 14 hour day. But the razor worked!
I've only used a straight once and only for my right cheek, never used a pain stick. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it but I definitely learned a lot by doing it.
Vince, You have my undying respect. You jumped in with both feet and took video to boot. Thank you for a great post!
SOTD 7/5/16 Pre: shower, Nivea face wash Razor: Gillette old type open comb (1918) Blade: Derby extra Brush: TGN Finest in olive-wood handle Soap: WSP Formula T Bay Rum Post: cold water rinse, Maggard alum, witch hazel, Nivea sensitive cooling aftershave balm, The Veg Tonight I shaved with the razor out of the khaki set and used one of the mildest blades I have and got a little better than DFS. Thanks for the advice @NCoxSTL about the blade, I wouldn't have wanted anything more aggressive in this razor. I knew this was an aggressive razor but I didn't realize how aggressive it could be, my hats off to the people who had to use them back in the day. It was basically a 2 1/2 pass shave tonight with 2 weepers and man was it aggressive but I had a little coaching from Neal before I attempted it. First pass WTG and you had better ride the cap with this razor if you don't want to get bit badly. Second pass was XTG, that's where I got my first weeper under my chin. I got my second weeper on my clean up pass going crossways on my neck, and I called it done. I'm glad I tried this razor and may visit it again in the future, but for now it's cleaned and put away till I forget how aggressive this razor can be! I may have been better off doing the challenge myself instead of this razor. LOL
