Finally back home and a straight shave. Shavette focus done, now back to straights. I touched up this Dovo Masters on 12k/16k stones before the trip and this is the first shave. Wow, the edge feels so much more friendly that shavettes while still being sharp. Queen Charlottes Soaps (QCS) creams have always been my top software but I think it is dethroned by the Santa Maria Novella. Both are great for straights, very wet slick lather. Well 4 passes and just a faint tickle from the alum and BBS. Good to be home. Irritation A Closeness A Smoothness A+ Sharpness A
If you can find it locally (basically Kroger here), buy some FW and bomb it into the Stone Age. It will help.
I have some. I like to use one of those evaporative do-rags when I'm mowing. I'll soak it in cold water with a splash of Florida Water in it. Very refreshing. Heavily mentholated FW would be nice, as long as you don't go nuts with it.
And as long as it doesn't run into to your eyes as you sit in the sun sweating. Though it would have made for better reading later had I encouraged you to proceed.
July Focus Day 12: Stirling Synthetic Brush Wholly Kaw Jamestown Gentleman SS Genco Easy Aces Stirling Unscented PSB Wholly Kaw Jamestown Gentleman AS My second shave with Easy Aces on loan from @Drygulch, and it was nice and smooth. I used a new soap this morning, the Wholly Kaw Jamestown Gentleman, which provides a very slick lather. I had plenty of volume, and I was able to get a nice yogurt consistency, until I thinned it a bit for my straight shave. From this shave, the lather seemed very stable and long lasting. The scent is also very pleasing, as it has some powder and floral notes, with a touch of tobacco. It really set up a this nice shave and the razor was more than up to the task. I followed up with the matching AS, which has just a touch of menthol, and I was done. it was a very nice start to me day. I hope everyone has a great day!
this morning's shave, one pass ATG, DFS. Evahs Sharp Star (3) Route 66 Ghost Town 20mm WD synthetic Florida Water Not much to say. Just a good fast shave. No irritation or AS burn.
In the Good Old Shavertime! July 12 Grand Blade Trial Razor - H1 Gillette Slim(6) Blade - (2) Soap - Arko Brush - BoS Omega 10066 Post - Alum, Aqua Velva Musk Second day with the Sharp Star and it turned out interesting. Had just rubbed the Arko on my face and the phone rang. Cartel business. Assigned the hit ho Three full passes to the baby! Yep, found it today and the alum was mostly quiet. A few areas lighting up but the worst was where I hooked my goatee on a pass by the corner. No worries. Much better overall result than yesterday with the more aggressive setting. The blade clearly likes this setting better. Tomorrow will tell if it has a limit or not. More on my blog which is linked in my signature. Have a great Tuesday!
Rockwell 6S/R1 Base Plate/ Ladas (4) Whipped Dog 30mm High Mountain AKA The Soap Killer Stirling Glacial Eskimo Tuxedo Thayers Fine Snakebite Went with the R1 Base Plate today. 4th shave on the Ladas yielded a DFS. Although very mild it was still very efficient and comfortable. 2.5 passes and I just missed the baby. Could have pushed it another 1/2 or full pass and caught it but I was happy with the results after the 2.5 passes. So out of the Base Plates (1-6) this is the most mild one (duh...no dip it's number 1) but as I stated above for being the most mild (I prefer more aggressive/efficient razors normally) this was still plenty efficient and comfortable to use. Again like with the number 2 (grow up...stop laughing... lol he said number 2) I had to change my angle in some areas to get it to cut the way I wanted too. Over all I am very happy with all the plates I have used so far (1,2,4,5) and will use them in the future. Tomorrow I am debating on which one I should use next (3 or 6) and I will leave it up to you fine gentlemen here. If it matters when I used the 5 Plate I said it was similar to a R41 just not as bitey so I am sure the 6 Plate will be an entirely different animal. So for those who care what would you like to see tomorrow.... 6 or 3?
July 2nd of 3 Brush Focus Badger Time! I did last month Synthetic, last ten days Omega boar. Now it's Badger time. Vulfix 660S Medium Super is my first and so far only badger brush. I traded a Gillette Slim to Glen @BigCabDaddy for it. He's not posted in a couple months, and didn't respond to my text message. Hope he's doing OK. The brush is working out very well. With no other of the type to compare I'm very happy. Very much softer than boar and works well with creams, but soaps agree with it too. The Proraso gives the mildest scented lather, yet doesn't skimp on quality. For those with sensitivities, give this one a try. Good seeing all the adjustable Gillettes being wielded. I enjoy all my sharp things, but this would be the last one I'd give up. It's going in my Will for my one (so, far) grandson. Paired with a Voskhod blade & set on #7 I get a DFS with no errors every time. Ride The Cap, y'all. All quiet on the alum front, and finished with Black Magic AS by ISOPLUS. It's alcohol free with a slightly sweet finish. At less than $6 for 14 ounces I can splash it on. Enjoy the heat, it'll be Fall before you know it.
6 I can do. Williams-PIF'd Tiger as well as my Old Type-Pif'd to a friend who wanted to start wetshaving. He's trying the blades tomorrow actually.
SOTD 7/12/16 Pre: warm bath, Nivea face wash Razor: Gillette Fat Boy (6) Blade: Sharp Star Brush: TGN Finest Soap: Arko Post: cold water rinse, alum, The Veg Well I got through it and am BBS for sure, but not sure if I can or will go to 9 doing 3 passes tomorrow. I was good till the ATG pass, should have done a modified pass or something. Tonight's shave was OK, but not one I will be repeating except for these trials. I may even modify the settings I will do from here on out for it. First pass WTG, I was good and got great reduction. Better than I had before which should have told me something right there. Second pass was XTG, and still better yet but I started hearing a little bell sounding off which should have told me something. Ever get that nagging feeling that something is just not right but you go ahead anyway. Yep, should have listened and not gone for a ATG pass, should have just done a clean up and called it a night. But did I, Did I, Noooooooo, I went for a full ATG pass and about half way through I new I messed up as I saw 3 weepers starting to trail blood. I finished up and knew I was in for the alum lighting up my neck, and I was right. I rinsed off with cold water to try and minimize the burn I knew was coming and then applied the alum. I was right it lit up my neck, oh I forgot to mention the irritation but not going there. Being the glutton for punish that I am tonight, I went straight for the Veg to get it done with so just gritted my teeth and splashed it on. Yes that life reaffirming sensation that Bama Samurai spoke of, well I was fully aware of it tonight. Yes I am BBS smooth, but no I don't want to do that again. It was a comfortable and close shave on my cheeks, and it was on my neck till I tried going ATG. One of those live and learn nights to be sure. I'll judge the shape my necks in tomorrow for the #9 setting shave and will let you all know. Hope everyone had a great shave today!
PIF'd him a tiger and an old type, he must not be too good a friend! That's a match made in hell, that I'm sure he'll thank you the day after!
Sounds like a two pass was all that was really needed. You do learn when that alarm goes off to finally pay attention. I'm that way mostly with straights. If I get that certain feeling that disaster is about to happen, or my confidence wavers, it's time to put it down!
