SOTD SATURDAY MORNING, JULY 31, 2021

Today marks the first meeting of the 30DC Pennsyltucky Chapter. As I write, my friend, Bill, is wending his southeast to the western suburbs of Philly. I've been speaking to Bill online for three or four years off and on, but this breakfast will be our first face-to-face. It should be interesting! Given our joint Pennsyltucky venue and backgrounds, I’ve picked a neutral, scrapple-enriched restaurant. As the Habersett ad says, “scrapple contains everything good about the pig, but the oink!”

The Genco 35 was my third straight razor acquisition, notice I didn’t say purchase. It was a straight up barter deal. I traded a 1908 Gillette Single Ring along with a Milord, both of which were not being used and were missing from my friend’s den collection. They were in decent shape, but really benefitted from the cleaning and replating he gave them. A well-known honemeister friend had been telling me about the great fine grained central NY/PA steel in these blades. He wasn’t exaggerating.

My son, Ben, reset the bevel - I wasn’t honing yet in those days - on his jnat progression and built a very sweet edge. I’ve since touched it up on a new slate that Glen Mercurio recommended, and was surprised at the beautiful result. Howard Schlecter’s constroption put the icing on the cake. The mug shave was everything it could be. My usual three passes resulted in one of those effortless shaves that felt like I was just sweeping the whiskers away.

The noggin shave featured my favorite artisan DE, the Colonial Silversmith! Loaded with one of my vanishing hoard of Polsilvers, it cleared away my dome stubble with aplomb. Colonial Razor is one of those artisan makers that tends to fly under the radar, but the Evans twins, Kyle and Kirk, have a real passion for their work. I’ve only met Kirk online, he’s a very committed straight shaver with an impressive collection of stones and razors. It’s Kyle the razor designer, who I know. His design esthetic is highly refined as the Colonial Silversmith indicates. Two ATG passes, and I’m again as smooth as my great-grandaughter’s butt!

RAZOR: GENCO 35 5/8 (Mug), Colonial Silversmith (Dome)
    BLADE: Polsilver
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE Knurled Aluminum Handle #007 w/ Hybrid Knot
    SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Bergamot & Thyme AS Balm.

Happy Saturday Everyone. I am up and moving early this morning. I need to run some errands and return some unused construction supplies. The master bath is done with the exception of the shower door. With luck that will get installed next week. Since it is so hot and muggy here in the ATL, I decided to go with Stirling Citron Glacial for this morning's shave. The chill was certainly welcome. Three passes and touch ups ended in a near BBS shave. I did a really poor job on buffing my neck

    July 2021 Recap

July 2021 has been a good month for me. With projects at home nearing completion, life can return to normal. I added two razors to the den. With sellers remorse, I picked up another Rex Ambassador to give it another try. So far I am getting on with the razor better this time around. I guess my skills have improved enough to enjoy the Ambassador. I also added the Tatara Muramasa to the den. I am really enjoying the razor thus far. As usual the best part of the month is hanging out with you guys. It is good to see @jgreenepa , Jeff back posting on a regular basis. Thanks for letting me be a part of the group. I look forward to participating next month.

    Essence by Tedelus razor
    Feather Pro Guard blade (2)
    Simpsons shave soap
    Simpson T3 Trafalgar

What a way to end the month! I started out with some straights and shifted over to shavettes in anticipation for the Essence. This is the 3rd shave with the Essence and it is getting better.

The T3 whipped up some nice lather this morning. Jim @jluc PIFed this to me when I purchased his Razorock Hawk. The generosity of this group is just amazing.

I really enjoy the Pro Guard blade over a DE. The Pro Guard does an excellent job and just leaves my face feeling better. I completed two passes on the cheeks and three on the neck. I'm as smooth as possible. I did have one mishap and the Pro Guard saved the day. I set down wrong on my right cheek and felt it dig in. The area developed two small dots of blood but nothing to even mention. The motions with the Essence are becoming more natural and the razor is a joy to use. The alum had just a little feedback but overall it was an excellent shave.

I have really enjoyed this month trying to learn new skills but most of all I have enjoyed the friendship of this group.

Ya'll are the best if the best!

    Take care everyone.

Alabama awesome shave Danny! I have enjoyed your ventures into open blade shaving. You are developing a skill that most men would never try. You should be proud of yourself. I knew from my early days here on the 30DC thread that you were somewhat in awe of straight shavers. Now, you have joined our ranks into shaving like men did in the 1800's through the mid 1950's. May you continue to enjoy your straight shaves my friend!

Another completed "focus" in the can. Feels good.

I definitely honed my skills and halfway through the month, I shaved off the goatee, except for a long soul patch,
thus exposing my chin, and upping the difficulty factor.
Good lather, rich with tallowy goodness, was created with my Simpson Hive and the Crabtree & Evelyn.
The Mysore Sandalwood scent is natural smelling and not too strong.
The Boker is one of my favorite straights. It's unassuming, efficient and sexy.
    Now I want to find a 102...:lam:

It's has been a challenging month, one I won't soon forget.
Next month is a time for regeneration and renewal.
