    Trials and Tribulations

My focus this month is to return to the Grand Blade Trials. I'm still a long way from being done so I'm going to focus on the next batch of blades. AND get the review blog and catalogue site going full speed as well. That's the "trials". The "tribulations"? Well, since MAYhem was so much extra MAYhem that blew me out of the shaving MAYhem I had planned, I'm going to revisit some of my planned shaves from May. Some of those will definitely be more of a tribulation than usual. My specific plan is six days a week with trial blades, two blades a week, and the seventh day will be the tribulation shave. Should be informative and a fun all at the same time! So....let's get it started!

    Razor - 1959 (E4) Gillette Fatboy (3)
    Blade - supermax-platinum-plus.jpg (1)
    Soap - Arko
    Brush - Jayaruh #46
    Post - Alum

Going back to blade trial setups, specifically the Fatboy (or Slim at times) and Arko. Mild 3 setting for the first shave and the blade is the Indian Super-Max Platinum Plus. Super-Max is a large manufacturer who bought up Vidyut and Malhotra. With headquarters in Dubai, UAE, they distribute in over 150 countries with 19 regional offices, including in the U.S. They have also made inroads into disposable carts and razors as well and push those heavily in Europe and other markets. They still make a variety of DE blades and with Vidyut and Malhotra on board they are large force to be reckoned with.

The blade was impressive on the mild 3. the JR46 and Arko lays down lather as fast and easy as anything I've ever used and the blade was very smooth and effective. Nice reduction on the first pass and the second pass and touch ups brought a near-BBS. Alum was quiet so irritation was at a minimum. It will be interesting to see how well the blade will perform at higher settings and should also give a better indication of its sharpness. My feeling after the first shave is to rate it high on the sharpness scale. We'll see if that hold across two more shaves.

I've always thought a trip to Dubai would be fun. I haven't played tennis in many years but I'd give it a go on their most famous court!

Well I went to the Maggard Razors website tonight and ordered one of their new two-band badger knots to put in the handle I received from Jason. I couldn't find any reviews of their new badger knots but I figured that with their reputation it was unlikely they would be stocking a poor quality one. I will let everyone know what I think of it when it arrives and is installed.

And, of course, since I was paying shipping anyway, I added some new-to-me soaps to the order (having so little around already ;) ) -- Maggard's sample sets of five each of Barrister and Mann's Latha and regular tallow soaps. I have heard so much about B+M soap on these threads that I thought I should at least sample them.

Glad you made it through a rough day, Chris. Like you, my kids can always make me smile in the roughest of times. I have no idea how you hold it together to sing at a family funeral, though. I did it once and held it together, but swore I would never do it again. Too emotionally draining. Prayers continue for you and your family, brother.

This lineup has been a real joy to use this week. Everything just works so well together and requires very little thought or attention to get fantastic results. Today was no exception with another automatic near BBS shave. I finished off with a splash of Fine Platinum. Since I haven't used it recently, I had forgotten just how much I enjoy the scent. I hope everyone has a fantastic Friday.

Decided to chase the baby today with some ATG for my last day at my current job. Did not achieve the BBS but got my closest shave yet. And only got a nice knick on the side of my neck somehow(the alum wasn't enough to stop it either) and a little more burn from the alum than I've had lately.

I work with a guy that's in his early sixties and when I told him I was getting a safety razor he said he had experience with them and said they were terrible and I was an idiot. Yesterday I told him to feel my face and when he finally did and then felt his own for comparison he said: "Ooooh...maybe I should get one..."

    Happy shaving everyone!
