I have both of these razors. 2011 R41 and a Feather As-D2. BOTH razors will give you a BBS Shave if used correctly.
The premise that one is better than the other or that one will give you a better shave then the other is false.
They are different razors with different blade exposure and both require different angles. I reject the premise that one can give you a closer shave then the other. Take any razor, shave with it for 30 days and you will achieve a close shave. The OP is quite frankly confusing the heck out of me and I am not convinced that we aren’t being somewhat trolled.

For those of you who think I’m a “fancy pants” for using a fork, I’d like to point out that Clint calls his family vacation “being on holiday with the family”. I’m not sure if he hangs out with the Queen while “on holiday”, but clearly his pants are fancier than mine by a large measure, regardless. Bring us back some truffles from your fancy Vacay, Clint! :)

I have no idea what the answer to this question is Rick. I’m just still reeling from the fact that you think pooling the collective braintrust of the 30DC might result in a smart idea...

I've invited him to join us here in The 30 Day thread. Either for the purposes of hearing the opinion of folks who have used the razors he asked about, or to get a bit of coaching concerning them. He's already invested in a R41 and has express reluctance at buying a bucket of razors chasing The Perfect Shave. Not a Newbie, but he sounds like someone who might appreciate technique trumping tools.

Do you think we could reach critical mass? If it happened would there be an explosion, or with enough density (not that I'd call anyone dense) form a black hole?

Awesome photo, Clint - as usual! Both the razor and brush are beautiful!

You are much more open-minded than I Rick. Same threads over and over; not even responding to good advice; am I missing something?

I couldn't agree with you more. With proper technique, you can get as good of a shave with any razor. You can only get so close before you start removing layers of skin. I just posted his "dream razor" in that thread since, apparently, an R41 isn't aggressive enough. It's the blade on a bolt that Neal used during MAYhem. If that doesn't satisfy him, nothing will.

My wife was kind of getting into the soap thing, til I bought her a jug of KMF, and now that’s all she ever uses.

He's experienced at shavette so the gentleman has developed his technique with an open blade. My shortcoming in our discussion is about the two specific razors. I've used neither and can only offer my opinion about DEs I know.

After using a Fatip for a number of shaves last month, and a Fat Boy on max (benchmark shave right there) I've noticed I'm not getting as long lasting shaves with my Schicks. My technique hasn't changed, or I may be relearning after not using injectors for a spell. The question was can you get as close of a reduction from a DE compared to a shavette. My thought was yes because all razors are the same.

    Sorry...No photo today...

I shaved this afternoon, since I had yard work to do today. I was inspired to try something posted over on the thread regarding the R41 & aggressiveness. One gentlemen posted a 3 picture series of a Gillette Tech, the last image being the cap, blade & handle - minus the baseplate. So, I figured, why not??

I loaded up a generous amount of L&L Grooming/Chatillon Lux Champs De Lavande using a Stirling badger brush, and went straight to a face lather. With a Gillette Silver Blue blade between the Tech cap & handle, I went to work. Very nice three-pass shave. A splash of Chatillon Lux (some kind of 2018 limited edition thang), and I was good to go.

Stunt shave? Nah. Ride the cap for the win!
I did slow things down, and used a bit more caution. One small weeper, but nothing a splash of cold rinse water didn't take care of.
The blade isn't quite as stable like when it's pinched tightly between the cap & baseplate, and you don't have the bar to protect you if carelessness sets in. Otherwise, it's not all that different than using a Tech with a baseplate. Except for the audible feedback. Evidently, the baseplate quiets things down a lot.

Have a great rest of the weekend fellas!

Every family needs a bkack sheep. Usually its me.

I use a travel Omega too. Nice setup.

There is no need to have shaved with those razors to answer. We know that technique trumps tools. Knowing that once ypu develope the technique you will get a close shave. Once you cut the hair at the skin the job is done right? All you can do is cut skin off. The answer to the question ( In my opinion) is a shavette will not shave closer then a safety razor that is used properly. Aggressive or not.

People have a habit of asking the same question 30 different ways and ignoring the answers.

I get the rep of being the mean, rough old guy when I explain that in threads. Not throwing out names but for some the questions just become silly.

    Thanks Clint!

Actually, it was quite smooth. I wondered if the lack of baseplate would make the blade chatter. It was loud, but smooth.

    Razor: : Gillette New SC
    Blade: 7 O'Clock Permasharp Stainless (2)
    Brush: 30DC LE/Pure Badger
    Soap: FrankenMarvy
    Post: Alum, Listerine, WH

Yesterday, I received a New SC head as a generous gift from a member on another forum and today was my first shave with it. First impression- it's a very solid razor, efficient, but not quite as harsh as a New LC (more like a very heavy Tech). The end result was a very satisfying shave with no issues or irritation.

This reminds me of that guy that kept starting threads about irritation and blaming it on how wet the hair was or his lather or blade. It was the same issue over and over with a new excuse.

I'll actually give people the benefit of the doubt when it's really a question they want an answer to. It gets annoying when someone asks a question then argues with advice over and over. At that point it's like you know it all so enjoy your razor burn bro.

Seven shaves in on the British Wilkinson Super Sword-Edge blade and it's still going strong in the '56 Flare Tip. Today will be no-shave day number three since the beginning of June and all other elements (Omega 10005, Proraso Green soap and Aqua Velva Classic Ice Blue) remain steadfast. While I find the greater blade feel of an Old Type makes it easier for me to achieve BBS results, the mild Flare Tip is just as capable by paying attention to direction of growth and the shaving angle of the razor. As someone once said.....technique trumps tools.
