Well, I've been doing this rule thing since a week ago Sunday actually that's also when I started wet shaving for the first time too. So I am using the same razor (Ming Shi 2000s) set on 1, blades (Voskhod), Mitchell's Wool Fat Soap, Dickenson's Witch Hazel, Captains Choice North Aftershave.

One question I have though is based on the fact that I am convinced after 1 week and 1 day of the 30 day rule that the number 1 setting on the Ming Shi 2000s is to mild and that I will not get a close enough shave with that setting, but I suspect if I bumped it setting 2 it would likely be significantly better. Setting 1 is leaving 1 or 2 whiskers behind here and there and the rest are not shaved close enouth which isn't really noticeable with my beard actually.

Nevertheless, my question is would I be breaking the 30-day rule if I change from setting 1 to 2 and would it benefit me significantly to stick with everything as is?

By the way the dudes hugging it out in the OP need a serious shave! LOL

Personally I would change the setting to #2. The key is to find a setting that works for you and then spend the time to master the technique.

I agree with Clint as long as you don’t keep changing or comparing back and forth. Try it on 2 and see. If it’s better stick with it. If not, leave it alone. Your technique will ultimately have influence on your results than the setting of the razor will, and the less you switch things up, the easier it will be. In golf terms, you are working on your swing right now. If you switch from a 9 iron to a 5 iron to a driver you’ll never develop a consistent swing. By picking one club and developing the muscle memory for a good swing (regardless of which club you use to learn to swing with) you develop the skill that can be used for every club in the bag, simply by making a few minor modifications (like stance) with each club. The swing remains the foundation.

I'm going to throw another question out there. If a person has good technique, rides the cap and maintains proper angle throughout each stroke, does blade gap matter?

The honest answer is no. If you are riding the cap and don't let the angle waiver at all there should be no difference between seeing 1 and setting 6. BTW the gap on the Ming Shi at 1 is bigger then the gap on a Gillette adjustable on 5.

I'm really glad to see you using the Super Speed, Jason. I think they are great razors. I think I'll move on to my SS after my current run with the Fatboy. I am fortunate to have birth year SS's for both my Bride and my Sister. Great setup and photo today! I'm glad you enjoyed a nice Father's Day at the lake!

Isn't the gap actually close to the 9 on a Gillette adjustable? It seems like that is the case with a Futur, if I recall correctly.

In a hurry to get out of the house this morning, I shower shaved with a 4-bladed Dorco cart and KMF cream that I applied by hand. Finished with USB and headed off to see my sweet kiddos at the hospital. Pretty good shave, but not too much fun. Back to the FB tomorrow.

Thank you both for the question and the answer this tells me that I need to greatly improve my technique. Are there any Youtube videos that you can recommend that are better than others that will demonstrate the proper technique and perhaps give me a good understanding of "riding the cap?"

I haven't seen a good video. Most look like a much steeper angle than what I use.
I put the top cap flat against my face and gradually lower the handle until I feel the blade. Try and maintain that angle. And remember, no pressure. Good luck!
