Omg Glen.. I remember that exact posting. I thought the poster was either a sadist or an idiot

I'm certain it's been done before. There are a number of different reasons for doing it, no need to go into details.

Personally, I don't see it as being THAT big of a deal. You just wouldn't want to use the BIG blades for it. Or those 'Sweeney Todd' specials - with the huge curves and blood gutters.

I am convinced that although prep is important and fun that too much can be made out of it. A sharp blade, good technique, and some water is all you really need. The rest is icing on the cake.

My edges are shii... Not so good. Thankfully I was able to sit down in a Skype session with @alpla444 (Dean) and get some well needed advice on honing with my finishing stone. It's the only stone I have.

I still find that I sometimes blunt my blades when I strop and only once, on a full hollow ground razor, have I achieved that pinging, leaping effect the blade has on the hair while 'tree-topping'. I'm getting there. The best advice for a beginner: you need a man who can! :)

    alpla444 That's sweet!

    Thanks,

Very kind words there Steve, mentor I feel is way to strong for my abilities, I'm just a guy with too many stones that likes to sharpen a razor or two. And help a friend if I can.

I used to shave that way with a straight and Shave Secret Oil. Wash face really well with soap and hot water...2-3 drops of oil..2 passes and done. Worked well and was nice for travel. Prefer soap though for the scent ...adds something to the shave.

So many people can’t atand to shave without using one of their brushes so these “brushless” options get overlooked. Cremo cream is another travel option. If used correctly it is VERY slick and provides one of the best shaves out there and especially useful when traveling. I take a two razor set and Cremo cream on the road for up to a week. No strop or brush needed. If needed I’ll strop on newspaper but my edges are good to go for 2-3 shaves per razor (at least) without stropping.

I heard of a guy that uses balistol for shaving, and stropping on jeans and afterwards donkey skin( te inside of the lower arm), and it works, just like olive oil,....

    But I like the brush

Balistol works as a pre shave oil, as shaving oil and it disinfect so it can serve as a rather strange smelling aftershave, and it protects the steel in the same go,..

A nice thing about oil, you can see where you are shaving.
