I decided to take a day off of straits to try out a few things that were given to me. I started out by loading a Personna 74 blade that was given to me by @Douglas Carey into a cheap Chinese three-piece razor that was given to me by @stingraysrock. I ended up with a nice BBS after three passes. The downside was two weepers and some burn when I put on the Clubman. I can think of three reasons for the burn. 1. Personna blades are no good. 2.Cheap stamped Chinese razors are no good. 3. I have forgotten how to use a safety razor after 2 1/2 months of strictly straights. Judging from the BBS, I bet it's not the blade. I'm going to wait a few days and load this blade in one of my better safety razors and try it again. Congrats on the BBS! Your Dad's FB looks like new, and it must be an honor to shave with it. G3 is my birth quarter BTW, so I think your razor is super cool. I'll try my first Voskhod in my FB next week, and we'll compare notes.
Thanks. Actually, dad said he only used it while in the service and that wasn't for very long. Every chance he had, he went back to his electric. Once the army was done, this razor got put into the medicine cabinet and forgotten for the last 55 years or so. It is in all actuality, new with not much usage time on it. It is a pleasure to still have it.
Thanks. I've shaved with the FB mostly on 5 these past few weeks. I performed a 5, 3, 1 three-pass shave a couple of times last month, and I found that two passes on 5 work better for me. I have a light beard, and you would barely notice a day's growth on me. So, 5 works well enough for me to achieve near BBS in two passes daily. I have shaved with the FB wide open, but I have to be more careful to avoid nicks and irritation. I'm used to shaving with Feather blades, so I suspect the Voskhod will change the way the FB shaves. In that case, I might decide to open it up a bit.
This is going into the permanent archives. Brilliant! And I've hired a consultant to figure out which picture of me is mot autograph worthy! Only 89,800 Voskhods? The Ruble must have strengthened overnight.
I really enjoy the Fatip razor head, it's my first choice amongst DE razor geometry. The gap and exposure allow the user to control the angle and reach a more shallow attack than other DE styles, and it really shines with smooth blades like GSB, Astra and Voskhod.
This is where you want to start, if you want >>new, hand forged steel<<. I learned on one and fully endorse.
I got one of those super cheap razors a few years back for around 2 bucks. The only good thing about it is the handle. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Day 4: Nathan Clark of Envy Shave is well known for making excellent brushes, and his "Envy" knots have become a favorite for new commissions and re-knots alike; not only because of the very affordable price points, but because they perform with knots from the highest price points. This particular goblet style aluminum is a LE version of his Alluminati line. It is perfectly machined in a medium to large goblet style, and is a deep maroon color that seems to change hue with different lighting and backgrounds. Two lines machined into the neck are the only design pattern. The deep throat in the base makes it very comfortable to hold and stable in the hand. The knot is pretty much perfect in shape and color, the level of contrast and pure whiteness of the tips suggesting they have been treated. It is a big, simple, beautiful brush. It loads soap like a big dog, easily holding enough for four passes, and not making you fight to get it out. Even on the very last touchups, painting strokes will give keep giving you more and more and more.... The tips are very soft for a two band, with just an ever so slight amount of enjoyable scritch. A good density gives this setting its backbone; it has scrub, and the splay is comfortable and feels natural. It's only minor drawback, and this may be due to its loft, is that it doesn't like to bounce back from its splayed position. A painting stroke or two is necessary to "reset" it. If this sounds nit picky, it is. The performance of this brush is excellent enough that you need to look for something to complain about. Although it bears no weight on the scoring, I think it is worth giving this brush some serious props for its value. One can purchase this artisan made brush for less money than the knot would cost from some high end makers, and it will perform right with them. So the Day 4 scorecard looks like this:
There is an old wive's tale that it takes 100 shaves to achieve consistency with a straight. You are making fast progress, once you get to 30 you will see a marked improvement. You are already making four passes, it took me close to 50 shaves before I could do me 4 passes. Like you I shave WTG, XTG, XTG, ATG.
A new set up featuring a new razor. I just received this Filarmonica back from @gssixgun. I could not hone it properly so I sent it to the master. The set up for the next couple of days will be Filarmonica 13, Simpson Chubby 2 Super and Tabac. The is dense brush that does not like to give up the lather. I faced lathered today and this brush while it does not give back the lather easily it does make a dent in the soap. Tabac delivered as normal some great lather. Glen also delivered as normal with a edge that was exceptionally smooth and very sharp, proof smooth and sharp can apply to the same blade. Four passes and just one tiny nick stopped me short of an epic shave other wise dolphin smooth and no irritation. Irritation A Closeness A+ Smoothness A+ Sharpness A+
