The way I convert the numbers 1.25"= 31.75 mm, 1.50" = 38.1 mm, and 2.5" = 63.5 mm. I agree that a 24 mm hole for a 22 mm knot should work. The other dimensions should be good. You will have to go light on the sanding IMO. Certainly @Jayaruh and @clint64 may have a better idea than I. BTW, very impressive photographs.
My first shave for the month won't be until tonight or tomorrow morning, but I'm in for another month. This will probably be another no-focus Focus or a series of mini-foci. I've got a couple of razors from @Morman Bridge's PIF that I haven't tried plus at least one that I want to go back and take another swing with. I also have a couple of blades I want to take another look at and I have at least another couple of weeks without wife or daughter around so I can play a bit with soaps and things that smell funny. That should be enough to keep me busy for March.
Jared and Doug are spot on. A 22 mm plug should work which would be 24mm as it exits. That is certainly large as you could go. It might be better to go 22mm hole for a 20mm plug.
A 20 mm flattop might be a really awesome look in there for badger, and would feel like a bigger knot. You can get a lot of shaving done with a 20 mm boar if you like the idea of that look better.
March 1 SOTD: Razorock Plissoft Brush Dettol Fresh SC Gillette Fatboy Gillette Platinum Plus blade Stirling Unscented PSB Clubman AS Day one of my March Madness No Focus Focus. I went with a cream that has seen very little action since I acquired some. The performance is actually pretty good, but I am not a huge fan of the house hold cleaner type scent. It isn't bad, but it isn't too pleasant either. I did whip up a nice lather, though. It was also nice to get back to a DE after the couple of disposable shaves. Man, was the Fatboy ever comfy this morning. All in all, this was a good start to my months of shaves. I hope everyone has a great day!
Starting today - March Madness Brushoff WEEK 1 - The Linebackers: Just a quick note about how I set up the scoring. It was difficult to do this in a way that all types of brushes could compete in the same scoring system. Lets face it, different brushes have different attributes; great at some things, less so at others. So I came up with this, hoping that maybe a $12 Omega has a chance of competing with a $200 Simpson in a general competition. There will be nine different categories, ranging from aesthetics of the handle to resilience of the knot when splaying. All brushes start with a baseline score of five in each category. Each brush will be judged in its performance based on my expectations of how that category of brush SHOULD perform. A silvertip badger should have softer tips than a boar. If you observe that an Omega pro has a softer tip score than a Plissoft synthetic, that does not mean I think the boar is softer, just that the boar scores better in its field. At the end of the month, I will take the top three scoring brushes and give them a second run to determine the winning brush in my den. I feel like I have a pretty good idea of possible winners, but maybe I will be surprised. All lathers will be made using Stirling soap. They will be performed in the manner I normally use that brush. I do not expect a 21 mm silvertip to face lather as well as a Chubby synthetic. So stay tuned for this evening's shave. Tonight's contender, and a bargain priced prospect to win it all, is the Stirling 24 mm Finest.
That took a pretty good of stones. Another HUGE example of technique trumping tools. I'm not really phased at the thought of the popsicle stick deal, but I'm not sure I would do more than even think about doing that.
I might have to pick up a can of that, just to see. I haven't used any can soap in several years, and probably not Barbasol in close to ten.
I like this guy. Cinco de Marzo anyone???? Now, before anyone answers let me be clear about something. This is NOT a recommended shave to perform. In fact, smart people who have a will to live would NEVER try this. So there is absolutely NO encouragement to do this. Of course, I've demonstrated my lack of concern for my own life many times here. So I'll be trying to improve on his result with less need for styptic. You are welcome to watch and shake your head. If you're in, however, that would be this Sunday. A Feather blade, carriage bolt and two nuts. I'll be building mine in the next couple of days. Anyone? Buehler?? Buehler??
