I had no idea Henkels made SRs. They do make great cooking knives. How are they for shaving razors? Do they still make them or is this a vintage blade? Love the brush.
This is a vintage Henckels and it is a wonderful shaver. I have older carbon steel ones as well. Very nice quality. Thanks
March Madness & Spring Cleaning!! March 17 Razor - Kai Captain Blade - (3) Soap - Route 66 Sweeney Todd Brush - Jayaruh #46 Post - Alum Back to the pain stick tonight with lather courtesy of Sweeney Todd and the JR46. I'm beginning to think I have this synthetic figured out and it's a great knot. Quick way to get more lather than I can use in two shaves. The Route 66 produced a fantastic thick and slick lather that left my face feeling great as well. Two passes with the Kai and the Captain blade. Very nice feel and finish, though the alum is pretty hot. Third day with an aggressive razor and I think my face is saying enough. I'll back off for a couple of days with something a bit less hazardous for my health. However, the finish was a very nice DFS and once the alum calmed down the feel is nice from the Lanolin. Hope you have a great weekend! Warming up a bit here and SWMBO is tearing the door off waiting to get outside and start the garden. That's why it's safer for me to work the hours I do.
March Madness Barbasol and Barber Blade Edition Day Seventeen Chop, chop...and a great two pass was had by all. Citrus on the finish. Other than that...all is quiet in Colorado. Have a superb weekend!
March of the Soaps Focus Crowne & Crane, Omega Pro #98 Weck shavette & Personna blade Gillette NEW LC & Feather blade Alum, Pinaud Special Reserve AS A fine vegan soap that loads easily when you rub a sample on stubble. Applied the boar brush, lightly shaken, and stirred for thick lather. Added more water for the more correct moisture and the brush filled up. After WTG shavette pass, I worked the loaded brush in a suribachi and it revealed enough lather for two & 1/2 more passes with the DE. Great reduction with the open blade, the open comb was a bit tuggy so I didn't push it. Alum was quite warm and sparkly under my jaw line. I had two little nicks from the Gillette, but they had closed up before the AS went on. Good Shaves Y'all!
March 17 (Friday ) - Gem-style SE and new soaps focus EverReady 1924 travel razor / Gem 1912 / EverReady 1914 -- Gem PTFE ( 2) Envy Shave Alluminati badger brush Stirling Naked and Smooth (unscented) Alum and PGS Black Willow Toner Several new soaps arrived today to join the ones that arrived over the last couple days:. Route 66 Lavender Woods, Reef Point Espresso, Soap Commander Integrity (unscented) and Stirling Naked and Smooth. after some dithering, I decided to try the Stirling, a tallow and lanolin soap. Excellent lather with good protection and glide and an excellent postshave feel. The Alluminati brush did an excellent job prepping it (and me). I see why people speak so highly of Stirling soaps. I tried another EverReady 1924, this one with a short handle for travel and a metal carrying case. The razor has a noticeable blade presence, and almost a chattery one. Not only aggressive and touchy but also rough. I did okay on my cheeks and neck but gave up on my goatee region and upper lip and finished the shave using my Gem 1912. I then relathered and tried a pass with my 1914. Using utmost care to skinstretch and to ride the cap, I succeeded in finishing with only two weepers from it. The razor does feel much smoother than the 1924s but still very aggressive with a lot of naked blade presence. I feel I have tried these razors enough to call it for myself:. 1912s good and I'll keep them in my rotation. I will also haul out my other three variants and give them a whirl. 1914s and 1924s bad and I won't bother trying to shave with them anymore or try breaking out my other 1924. This, btw, seems to agree largely with the contemporary view of these razors based on their longevity: The 1912 variant, despite a couple design weaknesses, was produced in various models from 1911 until the 1940s (almost to the end of the Gem razor era actually). The 1914, which looks like it was designed to correct the 1912's flaws, disappeared by the time the 1924 came out. And the 1924 in turn was dumped by sometime in the 1930s in favour of the TTO and push button loading Micromatic, G-Bar and then Featherweight (with the 1912 variants soldiering along beside them).
Your experience with the SE is interesting. The Gem 1912 came out in three variants over the years. First the Damaskeene, then the Brooklyn (often just called the 1912), and finally the Junior. In terms of aggressiveness, my research suggests that the Damaskeene is the least aggressive, then the Junior, and the Brooklyn is the most aggressive. I have all three, and my experience matches this. What I find interesting is that most people really compare the ER 1914 to the Damaskeene, and I find this to be true. They are very similar, but I find the 1914 a but smoother, mostly due to the curved head. I think most people would say the 1924 is more aggressive than any of the 1912 variants. I know I find it more aggressive. I wonder if your 1914 isn't damaged or something. It definitely has blade exposure, but that doesn't necessarily translate to aggressiveness. Of course none of them compare to the Gem Micromatic OC in terms of aggressiveness. That is the most aggressive SE I have tried, excluding straight razors, and it isn't even close.
It feels so good to be back home. I celebrated with my favorite combo. Route 66 and my PRC. SOTD Route 66 Sweeney Todd Soap Oscar 11 Brush Portland Razor Company Siren Lucky Tiger Fine American Blend After Shave Have a great weekend!
Day 23 of 30 days of straights I managed DFS this morning, along with reopening yesterday's weeper and adding 2 more, all on the third pass. Maybe I should have stuck to two passes. It has been about a week since I started using ABC (Antica Barbieria Colla). I am still very impressed with it. It does give a very slick lather. Do I like it more than MDC, my favorite? Maybe. DIY Pre-shave Oil ABC 30mm High Mountain White set an extra 10mm deep 3 passes, WTG, XTG, XTG Penhaglion Bayolea shave cream soothing gel 6/8 Round Toe Henckel 17 1/2 Thanks. That's encouraging. I feel like this is a very steep learning curve. I don't think It was nearly this hard learning a DE or an SE. Actually, the SE I just used correctly form the start, having previously learned DE. I know that at this point in the DE learning process that I was not getting cuts and weepers every day. The cuts have largely stopped, but the weepers are still daily.
March 18, 2017 Cobra Classic Feather Pro (7) Shavemac ATG LE D01 2 Band Reef Point Dragon’s Blood Generally, I have more time on Saturday morning and it is nice to slow down, relax and enjoy the morning. This relaxed routine extends to the shave as well. I take a little extra time loading the brush and face lathering. Reef Point Dragon's Blood lathered with this Shavemac Flat Top makes this extra time lathering a true indulgence. The wonderful scent of the soap and the firm but soft scrub added to the overall experience. I still went with my normal 2 pass shave but slowed down to enjoy the process. After touch ups I ended up with somewhere between my normal near BBS and a true BBS. I can't complain with those results at all. I finished off the shave with a splash of Fine Vetiver. I hope everyone has a fantastic Saturday.
You are doing well, in my opinion. It took longer than that for me to get consistent shaves without weepers. Keep doing what you are doing and it will come. Have fun!
March 18 a Scientist Saturday!!! Fendrihan Scientist razor Astra SP (p1), GSB(p2,3) The Phoenix Brush(19mm set) DIY PSO Stirling Pharoah's Dreamsicle Alum/TWH Nivea S-PSB The Phoenix is now 2 day of drying after resetting the knot to a depth of 19mm. Today we will see the fruits of our labor. It is GOOD!!! Nice backbone, great scritch and I find it's lathering abilities are better. Pharoah's Dreamsicle smelled great and lathered up beautifully. Whenever I use the Scientist, like a scientist, you must be methodical. I made it a point to ride the cap, longer strokes on the long smooth areas and short strokes on the curves and challenging areas. On the first pass I found the Astra SP to be kinda done. After finishing the first pass, I switched it out for a Gillette Silver Blue blade. The sound, as always was loud and sounded like rapid Velcro pulling but in all, it did well for the next two passes. 3 passes, no need for cleanup. Alum was very warm but dulled quickly. Thayers posed no issues. Finished with Nivea Sensitive Post Shave Balm. In all a BBS shave. This razor needs focus and methodical approach but can yield a great shave. It's only downside is it is loud, and might need some better support on the blade. Otherwise, it can do a excellent job.
