Yes, the current round of "let's make a razor" isn't for the faint of heart or newbies. I'm neither, but even I'm standing just outside the door on this one. I can do enough damage with real gear without inventing whole new ways of doing it. Not saying I'm not enjoying watching though. I tried Catie's a couple of times. Very nice soaps and sandalwood is a great scent.
Yeah, you're probably right. If I ever find out who started this whole MAYhem thing......well, ummmm.....I'll do something. Yeah, that's it!
Thursday Shower/Shave Shower- Noxzema facial cleaner, Dr. Bronner's All-One Hemp Peppermint bar soap Brush- RazoRock Plissoft Razor- Muhle R41 on a Maggard MR5 handle Blade- Voskhod (1) Soap- TSD Tabac type Thayers Witch Hazel with grapefruit EO AS- Florida Water with M-Bomb I had a few goals for tonight's shave. I of course wanted a great shave and I got it. I wanted to try my TSD Tabac type soap to see the differences between it and the London type lanolin. More on that later. Finally, I wanted to compare my current favorite Personna Red to the Voskhod. The Voskhod is a great blade, I honestly don't know which I prefer. I have another day with it to try to decide but they are 1, 2 right now, I just don't know the order. Regarding the soaps, I wanted to try my regular TSD soap and compare it to the lanolin. I really want to get the new TSD "Killer Queen" and I'm trying to decide which type to get. I think I prefer the lanolin soap, it seemed to lather easier and it was slicker. If someone could tell me what lanolin adds to a soap I would really appreciate it. I'm trying this soap again tomorrow to try and decide. I wanted to try the Voskhod tonight to compare it to the Personna but also to appease the cartel. It's an excellent blade, I'm having a hard time choosing. It's definitely in the running. Riding the cap resulted in a irritation free BBS shave. Have a great day folks!
How about a blast from the past. MAYhem is clearly in full swing with razors being mutilated so that their owners can try not to mutilate themselves. And I thought adding randomization and audience participation was wild. Well, I ran onto this earlier while looking for a picture. Here is my last year's MAYhem setups. Actually I called it MAYhem or Mercy. The bad razors on the left, good on the right, and used the same either horrible or just potentially horrible blades with each. Two weeks on the mayhem side, two weeks on the mercy. It was the first and last time I ever used a Flying Eagle. I also used Williams for mayhem and Proraso for mercy. I was SOOOOOO happy to get to mercy just to escape Williams. And, I learned that while Baili, Flying Eagle and few others are horrendous in bad razors......they really aren't that much better in good ones.
I am thinking there may be less members taking part in MAYhem next year.. We are only 13 days in and we are already stepping over the line of ballsy to just plain stupidity... And I am enjoying every second.
The Cartel has noted and highly approves of the Voskhod and it warms our hearts like a double shot of vodka to hear it rates so well with you. As I've never tried the Personna Red, and probably won't, but knowing its reputation as an excellent blade, it's nice to know the Motherland has an entry that appeals even to loves of the Red. And, besides, Personna "RED". Yeah, that's right up our alley.
If there are fewer taking part in MAYhem next year it will just be those who bled to death or lost fingers, noses, ears this year. Yes, I have to say I'm scratching my head a bit but I'll tell you....this kind of experimentation and creativity, even if it crosses a line or two of sanity, is extremely entertaining and, yes, enlightening. Seriously, shaving wasn't always done with "safe" items. The traditional straight razor was actually an improvement on a sharp rock or hunk of metal or whatever. Finding new ways to use things in a way they weren't designed for.....also Mythbuster epic!
Part of the purpose of this month's focus is seeing if I can find a better blade than a GSB. I have 2 contenders right now and I could honestly choose either and be satisfied. With half the month still to go there may be more contenders in the end. This month may turn into 2 to make the decision.
A DFS on the neck and a BBS on the cheeks is a normal daily shave for me. To do it with no Alum burn means you are getting there pretty quickly.
Yes they would be. Loads better. Trying to shave with my cat would be better than some of the blades I've pulled this month.
