MAYhem 2016 May 14 Razor - RazoRock TTO Blade - (3) Brush - VDH Boar Soap - Marvy Post - Cold Rinse, Alum, Nivea The @Linuxguile shave! A couple of quick notes. This was the double random shave that ended up picking a blade that had already been chosen twice, a brush that is on multiple picks and a soap that shouldn't ever see the light of day again, but keeps popping up. Chaos, it's fickle. The razor choice was a first for the month, but it's a poor choice in my book. I have tried to love the RazoRock TTO even with its clear QC issue. It just doesn't seem that the problem with the razor should have an effect on the shave but over time I have decided it does. It seems harsh and more aggressive than you'd think and I've had some pretty nasty shaves with it. Even more than with the 1918 that should be difficult to deal with. Pairing it with a third use Shark? Not a pleasant thought. And, using the rather stiff VDH Boar to lather the incredibly fickle and difficult Marvy........well, this could be a bad experience. The reality was not as bad as I feared, but certainly not a great shave. I started by keeping the pressure on the boar light as it worked to load. Rather than swirling I just moved the tips of the bristles back and forth rapidly and it seemed to load well and start a lather. I painted it on then dabbed on over that and it looked good. Felt like it always does, which is a bit goopy to me, and smelled like it always does too. Yuck! Grabbed the razor and started the pass and felt the usual roughness this razor produces, only added to by the Shark, which is not a smooth blade for me. I kept the pressure nonexistent and let the razor do the job and finished the first pass just ahead of the lather fully dissipating away. Even with the cold water and adjusted loading technique to try and mimic a floppy brush I didn't get the best Marvy has to offer. Which is to say, not much. Second pass XTG and I felt like the reduction was adequate for touch ups only so I tried that. One of the problems with Marvy is its drying effect, and I found I didn't have enough slickness to do a quick touch up in most areas. So, I relathered and worked fast to get the touch ups done and even risked a G-slide on the neck. Finished near DFS and called it done. Surprisingly, for this razor and blade, no blood. Unsurprisingly, I shook my head as I walked away wondering what the point of that was. Yeah I got a decent shave. No I didn't enjoy much of it. A "meh" shave, but even barely that. When will it end?!?!?! Oh yeah, at the end of MAYhem. Tomorrow it's the @ob1page second round shave and probably a shave I need. Ladas, 1949 Super Speed, Tabac, and only the Tweezerman to hold back perfection. A breath of fresh air. I hope. Hope your weekend is going well. Tomorrow is my Friday and I'm ready for it. A final thought on today's shave. Considering how the RazoRock TTO has treated me, in spite of my attempts to love it.....I fear the truth must be said.
Tonight's shave was ok. Razor: Fat handle tech Blade: GSB Brush: TGN Finest Badger in olive wood handle Soap: TSD Signature Alum Witch Hazel Nivea sensitive The shave tonight was ok just shy of DFS. First pass WTG, second pass XTG. I tried the Fat Handel tech and the GSB blade, it felt a little tuggy on my face tonight. Not sure but I suspect the soap, I received it in a tube that you turn the bottom on to advance it. I think it was my fault as I tried to use it like a ordinary shave stick and then use my brush for a face lather. I may need to try and put some in a bowl, and bowl lather it next time. I didn't push it tonight because of the blade feel so I just stopped. Cold water rinse, used the alum, a splash of witch Hazel, and then put on my Nivea.
I suspect my lather tonight, I didn't really get a good lather with the slickness I'm used to getting. I don't blame the soap I blame my technique of applying it as I have never tried straight face lathering with a stick before.
Hmm I feel like I could get a good shave out of a GSB using bar soap, or maybe even dry. They are one of my favorite blades so sharp and smooth, love em!
I don't know, this was only the second night using this blade. I think it was my lather, or as you said my angles could have been off tonight. I don't think it was actually the blade it's self.
If you noticed a less slick lather that's probably the culprit. I was going to ask how my uses on the GSB but you said it's the second night. They certainly last longer than that, in most cases anyway.
On its way arriving in plenty of time for June - That's the CJB Greager GR100B razor. Newer version of the original CJB with improvements including a Feather type spring and a rubberized handle. I wanted to add a second pain stick and miss the CJB that broke. So, this should do nicely. That also balances out my straight population.....two pain sticks, two traditional straights. Let's see, months generally have 4 weeks....a razor per week. Sounds like a plan is forming.
Let me know if it is worth grabbing. Looks nice but pain sticks have an ugly reputation... My CJB still hates me for no reason...
