On a positive note this week, I took my oldest daughter out to a local antique mall this week, and picked up another 1940's Super Speed for cheap. I had seen it there before but passed because it looked too crusty. This time they had slashed the price so I took a chance on it. After a 24 hour Blue Dawn bath and something scrubbing with a soft toothbrush, it is really nice. I was shocked that it all came off and I was really happy with the result. I love Super Speeds and could not wait to shave with it. I threw a Feather blade in and got a fantastic shave out of it. I find myself reaching for my Lisa's Natural Herbal Creations Cedar and Saffron soap more and more often, and it didn't disappoint. It's thirsty stuff, but lathers very well and gives me a great post shave feel. I also tried out an aftershave balm I picked up for a dollar at our local Dollar Tree. It's called Wit & Wisdom. It was pretty dang decent for a buck a tube. It reminded me a lot of the Nivea Sensitive balm.

@SharptoothC , if you have one, drop it in an ultrasonic cleaner (hot water) with the Dawn. There's usually a bunch of crud that'll come boiling out of the barrel and crevices. Works best if you let it sit in the hot water for at least half an hour.

My shave tonight was a little rough - I'd let the hair go for a Beatles song. (8 days a week) That meant that it was going to be rough cutting it all down, so I pulled out a thin cap copy of a Gillette Old (OC). It stripped 90% of the hair in the first pass, and got the rest in the second pass. I'm impressed with the razor, though - I managed to do single long strokes from the ear to the bottom of the throat. Two small weepers below the lip, both sealed instantly with styptic pencil. Didn't get everything under the chin down to the skin, but you have to look for it. Aqua Velva Blue Ice finished, and that stung. I couldn't just take my time to do it slow - my daughter started complaining about leg cramps and hurting behind her kneecaps. (probably another growth spurt. This kid is taking after her mother, and will probably be 6 feet tall by 14).

VDH deluxe soap and VDH boar brush.

Good morning everyone! 10th shave! Went for a 3 pass shave this morning, WTG and 2 XTG in opposite directions and is it MMMMMM...smoooooooth. A little alum burn on the neck real quick but other than that an awesome shave. Only one more week before I can buy things!

    Happy shaving everyone!

Well I suppose the work week had to start sometime. At least all the schools are officially out for the summer so that should relieve traffic pressure and make the morning commute better for a couple of months at least. Nothing extraordinary about the shave this morning. It was just a solid automatic near BBS shave where everything worked well together. A splash of Myrsol Agua Balsamica and I am off to set up the books for a new client. Take care and I hope everyone has a great Tuesday.

Yeah, thanks to you guys! Without this forum I'd probably have thought my kit was junk and that's why my face hurt and then spent a bunch of money and then probably given up. But the focus on technique and not gear has really helped.

Now besides soap I might try some sharper blades if I ever want to go ATG. The Astra SPs are great but I've gone too far down on my neck a few times into ATG territory and it pulls and hurts quite a bit. Maybe down the road I'll order some feathers or at least something a little sharper.

Right, Amazon may be the best place to get it. I've seen some at my local drugstore, so that would save on shipping, at least. As for Rise, a pack of 24 for $36(from the Rise website)...perhaps time to visit Dollar Store to see what THEY have for Rise. I should add that the new Rises are only 8.7 oz...not the 13s that I have now.
