While my straight razors are off getting honed I am rediscovering the joys of my DE86. I almost forgot how nice the weight feels and how easy a shave it provides. The Rapira blade is what it is, I'm not really a fan, but it was at the end of its life and I wanted to use it up. The bowl is a new ceramic thing from the clearance aisle at Target, it does a good job and only cost $1.50. I don't often use the Omega 11137, but it is a solid performer and I wanted to use something a little different. Its high loft worked well with the copious amounts of lather produced by the Proraso and KMF.

The superlather of Proraso White and KMF Cool Mint produced so much thick slick lather that it should come with a warning label. My bowl and brush were overflowing and the combo proved to be so slick that my razor glided as if it were on autopilot. The menthol in these two products did not create a face freezer, but it was nice and cooling and made the cold water rinse feel like ice water. The shave was excellent and my skin feels great, I'm going to have to use this combo much more often.




This is how much lather I STILL had after a full three passes of generous application. I could have shaved three more times easily.

I can vaguely remember the KMF Cool Mint and it smells quite nice, and the cooling effect is fair. The Proraso White soap is not powerfully-mentholated but it has more menthol in it than a lot of guys realize - definitely more than KMF Cool Mint, and it's very skin-friendly.

 

Tabac AS with a kick of Menthol crystals from Shave Den set me free this morning. I figured if a little was all I needed, I'd use more. First splash was Eh! Thought I'd missed the mark. THEN! About a minute later I was in the Arctic Circle of AS. Went outside for my first cigar of the day and the breeze hit my face. It was 50 degrees in Dallas and felt SUB ZERO. When would the cold subside? Took about fifteen minutes to stop growing. That was about when I thought I'd made a big mistake. Can't wait until tomorrow's shave to go again. Menthol Forever!!!

 

Yeah, I have to admit that the first time I used the Proraso White that I had not looked at the ingredients list very carefully and was surprised when my face started to get cold. I don't know why, but I didn't think it had menthol in it at all until my face told me otherwise. I guess it's because no one ever discusses its menthol properties when they talk about it.

The KMF Cool Mint is only mildly mentholated, but it cools well enough to be soothing. The scent is very heavy mint and is the one thing that I don't like about it. It's sort of like shaving with toothpaste, but you get used to it pretty quickly.

The two together are perfect for anyone with sensitive skin.

 

The emphasis from the new Proraso White soap is more on green tea and oatmeal than on menthol. Yet, this soap contains just as much, or more menthol than the Mama Bear Lemon Ice soap which I used today. The soothing effect from the Proraso White is brilliant. My skin is terribly sensitive but every time I use the Proraso White soap, it feels born again.

One of the most frigid set-ups that a menthol freak like myself can put together. The Axe Chilled wash is cooling enough, the Ice & a Slice is almost competition for Palmolive Menthol or Godrej Menthol Mist, and the 444 balsam and Barbon aftershave give a freezing which lasts for most of the day!

Wow...First time menthol experience this AM. I don't have all the matching gear yet, only 1 product, but it truly was a chilling experience. Great way to wake up on Monday morning!

This will be my third shave with the Union Cutlery. Yesterday the shave was a bit painful even though there was almost no razor burn afterwards, so today I decided to go with the combo that worked so well last time.

I used my rarely used VDH boar brush because I knew that I would need a beefy brush for all of the lather produced by the Proraso/KMF superlather. The VDH boar actually did quite well with the lather and may just be the perfect brush for this particular combination. The shave was a two pass wtg/atg shave that was pretty smooth and cooling, but resulted in a lot of razor burn on my neck and a few nicks on my right side jaw line (I've gotta work on my patience when using a straight razor). The cold water rinse and A/S balm did little to calm the razor burn, so I ended up holding a blue ice pack to my skin for a few minutes, which did the trick. Once the razor burn cooled off I had a nearly BBS shave. I'll keep working with this razor and hopefully I'll get to the point where my shaves are smooth AND irritation free.

I picked up the Wilkinson blades at Pasteurs Pharmacy last week. It's the white box with the red and blue stripe "Saloon pack" 5 tucks of 10 blades ea, (50 blades) for $1.29 I thought it was a mistake, but that's the price. I still can't believe it! $1.29!!!!

The first time I ever used this Ice Mint soap I was shocked at its menthol power - it could compete with Palmolive Menthol or Godrej Menthol Mist. The scent is awesome and the lather is a pleasure to work with, and it also gives great skincare. The Diana balsam and the Barbon aftershave are both delightful potent face-freezers.
