I'm now taken on the feather blades and the futur will sit quite happy on 2.5ish for a everyday shave or 1,2 miss a few day shaves
I, sir, honestly do take offense. ::kar I believe I am very serious about my shaving, despite the fact Feathers are NOT my preferred blade. I have found many things in shaving to be very much "Your Results May Vary". I will not look down my nose at someone just because they cannot or choose not use a product I get great satisfaction out of. Please, respect the differences of others when it comes to their shave and the products they use to enjoy in ways only they can enjoy. Thank you.
:happy096 Very well put Steve!! Yes, the phrase "Your Results May Vary" or YMMV gets bandied around a lot in these forums, and for good reason. No one but yourself can say what works for you plain and simple, and by remembering and understanding that very simple rule, a lot of misunderstanding and hard feelings can be avoided on these forums.
Wow someone is having a bad evening and I sincerely appologize if you feel slighted in some way. Just a casual observation from someone still exploring the various blades and the comment was meant more as information gathering. ::kngt
Apology accepted, my friend. As you can tell, it knots my knickers just a tad when people begin to tout blade X or soap Y as THE ONE, THE ONLY, THE MUST HAVE, the YOU'RE JUST NOT WITH IT IF YOU'RE NOT USING THE (fill in the blank). I understand folks have their favorites and I encourage and enjoy people to continue to share their thought and opinions about how it works for THEM, as long as they can accept it may not work for others. Some folks have allergies or skin conditions that prohibit the use of some products, so to "snob" them for not using what they use... well, you've read my response. Please, continue to share what you use and how you use it. You might be using or doing something that I haven't tried yet and just might like.
Just moved the dial up to 2 and still no problems; tried a Palmolive Classic creme evidently made in Brussels. Nice lather, smell, and feel.:happy108
Mine is in transit right now.. ordered yesterday morning from Best Grooming Tools, along with a case and a truck load of various blades. Can't wait! Gotta say, for my first order with Best Grooming Tools, it went awesome.. There was a June special for a free leather travel case for the Futur..I order a day late. Not only did Rob @ BGT honor the June special, he included a few sample blades for free.. and it was in all in the mail by the afternoon!! Wish I was going to have it for the long weekend (July 4th) but that would be expecting too much!!
You will love hearing the Futur cut through the whiskers with that light popping sound. It glides smoothly and has a weight and balance like nothing else. Other Futuraddicts in this Forum have said it is the closest to the single edge razor of all others.
After about two years of cursing the ever-cheapening Gilette disposables, I finally broke down and picked up a Futur back in April. I used setting #1 the first time out with the whole pre-conditioning oil, lather, and post-shave oil. Next time out I decided to crank it up to #6 and used the lather. Then I went with hot water only. And now, I do either a Cold Water Shave (or shave with a dry face and dampened razor) with the Merkur Super blades. So yeah, gotta save I love it. (Thankfully I only have to shave every 2-4 days, so I'm still on my first pack of blades. Will it get even better with different blades? Or just less expensive since it seems that the Merkur Super blades are some of the pricier options out there???) PS. New to the site. First post here. Hey everyone!
JPR, I use a Gillette Bleue blade extra that came as a freebie pack of 10 with shavemac 177 that I bought from another member. They last about a week in my Futur with shaving everyday.
:signs021I changed to a 7 o'clock in the green wrapper from the Bleue extra and had a DFS; Porazo green tub and a shavemac177 silvertip. Merkur Futur comes through for me again:happy108
My thoughts exactly. A Futur dialed up to #6 used dry sounds more like a murder weapon than a razor. You must have one tough epidermis is all I can figure!
Just returned from a week + of travel and a red-eye flight that lasted forever with delays, equipment problems, reading lights on board that didn't work, and a heavy beard. The Futur shave with a Prairie Creations Call of Wild thick lather made everything right with the world again. I seem to prefer that the lather be thicker with the Futur and the Fatboy, atra, or SS razors, less thick.
Just got a Futur about a week ago, along with some Iridium Super blades, from Bullgoose. I have about a half dozen vintage and newer razors, and mostly used a Mergress before this purchase, along with another recently purchased razor from Ikon (Deluxe open comb head). I've been wetshaving for a couple of years, and all I can say is that this razor is the best adjustable for me by far. It DOES shave a little differently, but in good ways. It is noisy, as some point out, but I love the feedback, as it helps me insure the correct angle, which seems easier to find on this razor than others. In combination with the Iridium blades, I got (out of the box) one of the best shaves I've had when set to 1.5. Now it's set at 2.5, which seems to be my best setting. So I'll be using this for my adjustable in the long run, and will likely give the Mergress to my son. Not to knock the Mergress. The Futur just works better for me. The Ikon is a great non-adjustable. Between the two, I'm a happy man!
Readerbob, it keeps getting better and I now have an assortment of blades to go through to evaluate. Have not tried the Iridium blades.
