Great Keegan, I have been looking for one to try at $50-60 but they are usually in the $70-80 range by the time I see them. Also, same for the Mergress. I will keep looking but really need to sell something. Just picked up a Grand Shave King and a British made Parat in perfect condition but I do not have a beard which makes the Grand Shave King more of a collectors item and the Parat is extremely well made and shaves like a dream but the handle is too small for my stiff hands.

Blades... really like the Sharks but have not tried the Astras yet.

Well now I travel with a second Futur that I bought for that purpose. I also have two travel brushes and just returned from a four day trip after taking my Rooney Heritage in a tube with a holder. Go figure....spoiled I guess:signs021

Don't be afraid of the gap. I find that the Futur needs to have a big gap to offer a nice shave. Just be careful, if you use too steep of an angle, it will literally slice your face off. That said, with low angles, it offers a great shave.

Hi Gabe, I am on 2 now and it seems to do great after 1.5 for the past four months. What is your setting and blade of choice? BTW I love my A-E shoes and they are one of the few that still make a narrow width.

The Futur is my favorite razor as well. I have had to have the head replaced, Merkur sent me one in about 4 days, Thanks! I do wish that it the head screwed on instead of popping on the way it does.
Anyone have some input on what the closest comparison to a Futur is?

Jason, the Vision 2000 is what Merkur introduced as the next level of Futur and it does have twist down blade doors. It has many of the Futur's characteristics and is like the Futur on steroids. My Vision gives probably the best shave that I have ever had but I like the pop off top of the Futur because of stiffness in my hands. The Vision is also engineered to perfection; you push the top bar down and slip the bottom cap off which is a keyhole design. The bottom tto then unscrews and every thing can be brushed or wiped clean.:signs021

I just cleaned my Futur which had some soap scum in the spring mechanism. Some of you Futur lovers may find these pictures interesting. It is a two step process. Push the center bar on top down with the adjustment on 6 and unscrew the handle. Do not let go of the top piece as it is spring loaded; at least do not point it at your mirrow if you do:happy097. I did but fortunately I am not going to have seven years of bad luck; nothing broke.

    ya beat me to it

nice post you beat me to it. I had the same problem a few days ago and thought about posting with some pics. but I did have some issues.

    1. when screwing the head back on I noticed some wiggle on the mechanism, I had to try several times until I guess it screwed on correctly with the proper adjustment.

    2. I also noticed that after just a few days it started tightening up again so I took it apart and lubed it with plain Vaseline petroleum Jelly. Smooth as silk now. hope that helps.

by the way I love my futur. Initial across the grain pass on 4 then against the grain on 2 this seems to always work like a charm.

I used a little Remington gun oil with Teflon...Rem Oil...huge spray can for a few dollars and I use it on my shotgun also. The 4 setting with the grain and 2 against sounds like a plan. I usually just stay on 2. Love the Shark razors but not the Astras for some reason; just what works for me as there are a lot of choices.

    Experimenting with settings

I did something different today I did across the grain on 4 (1 pass). then against the grain on 2 (2 passes) on the final pass I dialed it down to 1 and only used water as a lubricant. I got an Excellent BBS no irritation I didn't get a sting out of my skin bracer, only the cooling goodness.

I'm thinking about using some shave oil on the final pass now. Instead of just plain water. will report tomorrow.

Hi Willy and welcome to this thread; I used mine right out of the box while still a Newbie and had only shaved in recent years with a 40s SS, Aristocrat, and an Atra. The setting of 1.5 worked for me until I moved it to a 2 last month. I am going to try the 4 wtg and 2atg like Mynorx.

I had cleaned my Futur a while back after owning it for several years and when I reassembled it the settings were off. Has anyone else noticed this about the Futur? It's no big deal and it does not affect the quality of the shave but my setting gauge is no longer calibrated. 0 is know 1 and so forth to 6.5
