That's like asking what's the best shaving soap or best razor. Ask 20 different people and get 20 different answers. That being said, I see that I'm not the only one who likes the MR5 from Maggard Razors: I also like the MR3, although it is a half oz heavier than the original handle and makes the razor pretty hefty. Maggard has quite an assortment of SS handles, all well made and very reasonably priced. While most of them are not a true satin finish, they're not polished to a mirror shine either, and I think that they look really good with the satin finish Mongoose, not to mention feeling great in the hand. --Bob
These blades don't bend like DE blades so the blade exposure doesn't really affect the shave. however, The blade sits way back in the AG2 which means it's going to be much milder than the SS. I've been using SE razors for many years and The only thing that matters is the distance of the blade to the baseplate and also the gap. blade exposure doesn't make much difference IMO. I'm not sure if this change was intentional from Mongoose or they're using different machine shops so there is no consistency.
I used my Mongoose today after over a month of Injectors. I almost forgot how nice this razor is. Two pass BBS SOTD Mitchell's Wool Fat soap Rubberset 400 Mongoose Feather Pro Super blade Alum Thayers Witch Hazel Déjà Fougère AS Have fun!
For the last month I have been trying to get used to my mongoose, but my face just doesn't like it. I've tried the mildest blades available, different soaps, and it still isn't my cup of tea. I might be offering it to anyone else who wants one.
B2 satin, and even with the Kai Captain Titan Mild or Kamisori blades, I just feel it is too aggressive for me.
The problem as I see it.. The milder blades are essentially "dull" I tried the captain Titan mild blade and found it to be uncomfortable. Very course feeling and not smooth. What determines aggressiveness with this razor is exposure and that is determined by the size of the blade. The feather pro super is a wider blade and makes the razor as aggressive as it can get. The regular feather pro blade has the same dimensions as all of the so called mild blades so the exposure is the same but is sharp and smooth and really makes this razor shine. Remember these blades are made for shavette type razors so what is defined as mild is not the same thing in the Mongoose. So after all this blathering get a feather pro blade in the razor, get a nice lather on and enjoy a clean close smooth shave!
what do you mean a "chance" to get one? I don't see it on their site. Are you referring to the waiting list?
Be sure to check at Straight Razor Designs as well as Maggards. The AlumiGoose is not in stock there now at SRD but were in stock earlier today.
If you contacted them and said you were interested they put you on the list. I got a email today that said they 35 of them and I had 48 hours to order otherwise it goes to the next guy. Another wait list I know but this was only about 10 days. I would go to their website and let them know that you are interested, see what happens. Maybe not all of them are spoken for. When I ordered they had 31 left.
Today's shave: Mongoose w/Maggard MR5 handle, Feather Pro Guard blade (6). Went back to the Mongoose today after several days using an assortment of Rapide wedge blade razors. Sort of like rocketing forward a century or so in a time machine. (Which is not to imply that the Rapides aren't great shavers - they are.) This was shave #6 on the Feather Pro Guard blade - still smooth and sharp - a good close shave w/no irritation or weepers. --Bob
