A couple sad brushes in need of attention. I saw these ..... a bullet shaped Baton #7644 and and hose nozzle style Ever Ready #50; both in need of attention and not in fantastic condition, but I have a weakness for butterscotch and caramel brushes. After removing the old knots and sanding the opening a touch; I set 20mm two banded badger knots in each. Neither are perfect ..... the Baton two vertical cracks (stable) and the Ever Ready just doesn't want to polish up. That said they're up for sale, great for someone that wants a little caramel in their travel set for not a lot of money. And as always ..... more to come.
Being stuck at home, I'm back with three more. An Erskine H-750 I suspect Simpson Classic 1, though its handle is only 35mm tall. A butterscotch Boots, I believe produced by Vulfix or Kent. After removing the knots all three had their openings enlarged a little, but the Boots was much more from 18mm to accept a 20mm knot. Lofts were set up to be proper and give nice backbone. Ready for another 50 years of service. And as always ..... more to come.
A few more completed ....... A Culmak 84 A Simpson Commodore X2 A German made Butterscotch. Restore to two banded badger, Ready for many more shaves. And as always ...... more to come.
I noticed in a group of brushes an Ever Ready Badger-lon that it was getting something that resembled cell rot. I received in the Traveling Shave Den Box a Peerless that had a beat plastic bottom, but a nice bakelite top. After salvaging the bottom of one and the top of the other, removed the knot and cleaned prior to merging them. Normally I would install a two banded badger, but instead I installed a 20mm boar knot; think someone might might enjoy the scrubbiness of a boar. With a handle height of 43mm, a loft of ~52mm, giving a total height of ~95mm. Resurrected to a new life ....... being the sum is greater than the parts. And as always ..... more to come.
I offered to make @Jim O a boar brush from a vintage Canadian Simms brush. Removed the knot polished the black (unknown material took far more time than it should). Enlarged the opening to take a 24mm knot, weighted it and set knot. I gave it an initial lather to remove the dust when I was sizing the handle, which also helped in the de-funking the boar knot and removing loose hairs. As soon as it fully drys it'll be off to its new home with Jim. And as always ..... more to come!
I saw this Culmak brush being sold on ebay restored with a synthetic knot ...... I asked the seller if he would remove the synthetic knot and sell just the handle. He accepted and even reduced the price. I installed a two banded badger from Shaveforge and set the knot at 48mm With a touch of weight, a great chubby shape; I'm quite please with this Culmak 49. Best of all it's a butterscotch! And as always ..... more to come!
A little more butterscotch!! I've been watching a beautiful butterscotch Plymouth on eBay for over a year that was priced about $15 more than I wanted to pay. Then this one popped up for a very reasonable price so I jumped on it. The second one is shaped like a Simpson Colonel but is beefier. It's marked AS5 Best Badger The third one is a Simpson Key Hole 4 (KH4). After a little work ....... With the boar knot removed and the opening cleaned up with a Dremel drum sander I set in a 24mm Maggard's two banded badger. I set it to a loft of ~55mm to have a wonderful backbone of not too stiff, but far from floppy. With a similar shape to a Colonel the similarities end there. A Colonel knot is 21mm, but this AS5 is a takes a full 24mm Maggard's two banded badger knot. I set it's loft at 52mm and has very nice backbone. With the original badger knot removed, I opened it up with a Dremel drum sander to set in a 24mm Maggard's two banded badger. I set it to a loft of ~55mm to have a wonderful firm backbone. Like most of my restorations I'm not sure if I'm keeping any of these, so if you're interested in any brush you've seen on this thread, PM me and maybe it's available for a new home. And as always ..... more to come!
I picked up a butterscotch that has a Surrey look to it. After removing the knot, I expanded it to accept a 20mm knot. After a soak and a hand lather. I believe its a Rubberset because I have another with a similar bottom. And as always ..... More to come
Hi My diy handle and omega 48 knot https://tendaggimania.com/prodotto/tendicorda-per-tende/ I drilled into the wood and cut a washer from a plumbing drain pipe and glued it with epoxy glue. The end ring is convenient for hanging to dry
I saw this Rubberset 400 #3 on eBay for a price that was just too good. I've had them in the past, but I'm just not fond of them. That's why I made mention that I'd be willing to part with it, @brit aka Gary contacted me that he wanted it restored, but not polished. After removing the old knot, I sourced a knot the would fit it properly. An Omega 10065 end up to be the best candidate. I disassembled the brush, cleaned the handle with a dish soap / salt mixture and set to work installing an internal shelf to set the knot. I retained the cork with baking soda and super glue (works very well) I used one 2023 penny to set the proper height and installed the knot. The yellow smug in the handle is a slight reflection of my yellow hoodie. I'll be shipping it off to Gary in the next few days to be enjoyed by my Canadian brother. And as always ...... more to come.
