It's been awhile but ....... Simpson M6 restored with a TGN 20mm Silver tip Badger A Redleaf restored with a 24mm two banded badger from Maggards. A Rooney restored with 24mm Manchurian Trotter T-1 knot. A Vulfix restored with a 22mm two banded badger from Maggards. A Simpson #57 restored bored out to accept a Best Badger from a Simpson #58 that was shattered. An Opal #50B restored with a Simpson Duke#1 that was badly damaged. So much butterscotch and caramel restored to lather many more years to come. And as always ....... more to come!
Back in March of 2023 I won this Kent M8 . At first I thought it was cell rot, but the material was a degraded type of rubber. either case I decided on replacing it. Turn into a real chore. As it started ..... Needed a donor for pieces ...... Sizing ..... Assembled .... As you see took a section from an emerald Surrey brush and used a 1968 (birth year) English 5 New Pence for the bottom. Any defects that show in the pictures are either shadows, reflections or extremely magnified. When setting the height of a knot the (very) general rule of thumb is double the diameter of the knot. But I fine it depends on the type of knot. When using a silver tip that general rule applies, but I'm using a Maggard's 20mm two banded badger so I set it at 2.5 times the diameter of the knot and you're rewarded with a knot that whips up a beautiful lather and splays just right. Overall height ....... 105mm Handle height ......... 53mm Knot diameter ........ 20mm Loft ......................... 52mm Weight that was added come in the epoxy, the new base, four pennies and the 1968 English New 5 Pence; this weight give a nice heft. I only used it on a test lather, but I'm looking forward my next shave. This restore was a lot of thought and labor, but in the end, I think it was worth it. And as always ....... more to come!
Thank you, Gary! Thank you, Sara .... I cut the Surrey brush using a band saw. I actually sacrificed two Surreys restoring this brush ..... One I cut vertically from bottom to top to see where it was solid and hollow inside. The other, to cut the section needed to match the diameter. Surrey brushes are nice because they polish up nicely..... similar hardness as alabaster ..... that said they can be scratched.
