I am in as of today! I looked at all of my stuff and realized it was time for an intervention! Of course I lasted 14 days in "No Buy July" so this is gonna be a challenge! I knew I shoulda ordered one of Adam @Drygulch new 45 strops before 12/31!!
Well, I waited until late in the afternoon yesterday (January 1st) before bidding on any razors and I only bid on one (which I won - and will pay for this morning). I must say I'm very proud of my self control. Normally on a holiday I would have bid on something first thing in the morning or at least before noon.
It's interesting. I post on two other shaving fora and my signature is the same as mine here at the Den, reflecting my No-Buy 2016 intention. Not one single response, question or comment from anyone at either. It's clear which fora are vendor-driven and which are member-driven. One of the main reasons that the Den is now my #1 choice.
Hard to tell when my first major shave-related purchase of 2016 will be(that is, outside of CVS, K-mart). I think I KNOW what it will be (another Clubman A.S.), but I still have some time to go with the Country Club.
What do you think of that Muhle brush? I have been eyeing one of those for the last 8 months. Err....... I mean I HAD been eyeing that brush. Of course during NB16 I am not looking at anything!
Good Morning everyone. Day two is here. I'm glad I haven't been scanning the ebay razor sales yet. Im not going to look at any vendor sites either. I remember looking at that stuff during my last sabbatical is what triggered my RAD, and I started buying stuff. Sorry to hear we lost one member already. This is not going to be an easy year, but no pain, no gain. Good luck to everyone!
I wish all NB2016 participants great success in their endeavor! I'd also like to thank everyone for making TSD the great community it is. You all rock! I am preparing for the next TSD Raffle, which I'd like to make an annual Jan or Feb event. I hope it isn't a conflict for those of you participating in NB2016. Thank you to those who have mentioned ways to support TSD financially through the year. Besides the store and donations, making TSD's Amazon link your bookmark and using it for shaving or non-shaving related products also helps support TSD financially.
I actually like it a whole lot. Of the four, it's the one I have the hardest time giving up. The handle really is a brilliant shape. Great for wet hands to hold on to. You won't mistake this for a plisson knot. It's not stiff either though. More of a springy consistency I guess. Lathers very well and holds plenty for a moderate sized brush.
Actually, I like all the handles @JR Reyes. Mostly it's that I've decided to focus on larger, boar brushes as you know. The Rubberset style handle is boar, but it must be clipped because it hasn't split in years. I haven't measured but I'm guessing it's only a 20mm or so. The other three I think someone would enjoy as is but I might consider putting one of those Ubersoft knots like you use in the PARKER if I hold onto it.
The instigators of No Buy 2016 have built in an exemption that anything spent or donated to TSD is allowed.
I did not realize you had an Amazon tie in! This is good news, I shop Amazon often because of where I live. Will go through it from now on!
Ditto!!! I, too, believe TSD is member-driven and is my favorite. I have deleted my book marks to all other shave forums. 2016 will be TSD only for me. Just a personal choice. I like it here.
Hello all, I just got done with a grueling task. I deleted all my shave related items from my eBay watch list. And I don't regret it! It's whole hog or no dog for me. I really hope I can stay with this commitment. I haven't had any real impulses to buy anything yet, but I'm sure that will eventually happen. I'm going to fight the urges off though. I can do this!!!
When you feel that overwhelming urge to buy something new just go to where you store your soaps and creams...and smell a few, take your brushes and feel how soft they are, take your razors, one by one and admire their fine engineering. Then you may just realize that you can enjoy what you already have.
So true! Good advice! There will never be razors as well engineered as some of my vintage Gillettes. And I have some fine software too. I have enough razors to shave with a different one every day for 7 months. It's high time I rediscover those old classics. I like what you have said. Thanks.
