I have often contemplated buying a new modern razor...and then I pick up a Gillette Slim or an Aristocrat or a Heavy Tech and I marvel at the fine engineering and craftsmanship. For me nothing comes close to a vintage Gillette.
Of course as soon as NB2016 begins I'm reminded of three items that I've been on lists for. One handle-UFO- and a couple of brushes. One has been paid for , two have not. I mean, really, a UFO handle...I can't say no to that! In my book I'm still in. Hopefully all these acquisitions will be completed by the end of January, except for The Varlet, which could be anytime this year. Keep up the good work everyone, two days down.
My reintroduction into traditional wet shaving came when I inherited a 1946/47 Gillette Aristocrat. A good friend had passed , and his nephew remembered that I had admired the razor greatly, so he saw to it that I recieved my friend Ray's Aristocrat. I so admired that work of art, that here we are , 3 years later, and I have a substantial investment in vintage Gillettes. I truly admire those marvelous razors. And I have really enjoyed the entire aspect of the traditional wet shaving culture. But there comes a time in all hobbies to slow down. And that's what I'm going to try to accomplish. I'm not done collecting by any means, just taking a breather. It's all part of the journey. Have a great night!
Well, today I recieved in the mail, two items that were ordered pre-restraint. The first was a small tube of Trumpers GFT. I just love this stuff. Great lather, and scent too. The second item I recieved, is a couple ounce jar of eBarbershop Patchouli cologne. I am very disappointed in this purchase. This stuff smells lousy. I bought it blind, and had never smelled it before. Oh well, better luck next time.
Patchouli is a scent I have never been able to develop a liking. Wish the purchase had gone to your liking,
I was perusing eBay this morning as is my habit. But it dawned on me, I don't need anything and maybe don't even want anything for awhile. I have soaps I've barely tried. I have razors in much the same state. Three large boars are really all I need and at that I have what might be a fourth on the way. Likewise, I probably have around 100 different blades lying around and have another 300 on the way. That's three years worth or so I figure. Pretty much set for the zombie apocalypse. But that being said, I remind everyone and most especially myself that I'm not on this NB'16 band wagon but only cheering from the sidelines. Instead, my goal for 2016 is to get rid of more than I buy. Gonna be tough though because all my purchases are all too recent and I remember what I paid making it much more difficult to let go of things at prices others would find enticing for the most part.
OK, I already fell off the wagon. I have changed the NB'16 in my signature to SD'16 for Slow Down 2016. My intent is to not buy extra stuff I don't need this year, but If I run across something that I want and it is a really good deal. That is why I have a Schick G1 coming this Saturday. If I run across a single ring, a Rocket, or a Blue Tip this year and they are a bargain, I will be adding them to my collection. That is all. And, I am open to trades as well. But, according to SD'16, I will be slowing down and enjoying the stuff I already have. http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/i-fell-off-the-wagon-good-bye-nb16-hello-sd16.48972/
Jim, That's okay. Over the years I have been able to acquire Georgetown Pottery G1, G2, G3, G4, G5, G12, and G20 scuttles. To complete the collection, I put out a feeler for an Ambrose scuttle...one of Georgetown' s early brush scuttles at the end of last year. If one becomes available, I will purchase it.
So far, so good. No urges or anything like it. I'll make it for the week. But like I said earlier, my bride is going to be my enforcer for the year. And she's tough!
I agree that last year was expensive. But I'm afraid to say it will be easy to resist the dark side, because I don't want to jinx myself. I failed two sabbaticals last year pretty quickly, all it takes is a little complacency. Hopefully, I'll remain vigilant, and survive this restraint in good order. Good luck everyone! Keep your powder dry, and don't bid until you see the eyes roll!!!
I pretty much have. I still have my eBay account, but I deleted all shaving related items from it. All I am ordering from there is some radio equipment, and believe it or not, my lady love wants to try her hand at whittling of all things, so I ordered her some whittling books, and a whittling knife. What the heck, the worst thing that can come of that is a couple of odd nick knacks!
