Skeptic... Sheesh... We might just surprise you yet. Of course you might not understand, not being into our whole secret symbol vibe thing we have going here... Merry Christmas to you!!
I actually rather admire the attempt to do a full year of NB. I know I couldn't but for those of you to set out on this pretty epic journey - Best of luck!!
I really think the consensus on this isn't that we can't buy; God know we all came to the table almost reluctantly with our own terms, but that we just aren't going to buy with reckless abandon, and try to appreciate what we have??
Hello fellow Shave Denizens, I would like to join this esteemed secret society, however, I may not be able to last a month, let alone a year. Lord knows I have enough hardware and software to make a year long sabbatical possible, but the longest I have managed to date is one month. I hesitate to commit to the whole year. I'll think it over, and decide after Christmas. I really would like to commit, but I am hesitant. I'll let you all know in a few days if I decide to join you in your valiant effort. Have a great day.
So far I'm on an imposed no buy until I can find a new job. I fully intend to purchase a few things as soon as I'm able. I have a list.
When my wife and I were in our "poorer than a churchmouse" phase, she used to keep a list. Anything she wanted to buy had to be on the list, and had to be there for a certain period of time (I don't remember) before it could go to the "okay to buy" stage. If it wasn't for her, I probably would have gone bankrupt like 20 years ago.
Well, I've backtrailed this thread all the way to the beginning. It seems that consumables are a forgiven item(s), and the TSD store are also acceptable purchases? The fact that I may need some DE blades or After Shave Splash was really my only hesitation. I guess I can go ahead and commit. Will someone please summon the Grand Wazoo of this thread and let him know I'm aboard? Thanks for the inspiration people ! I'll give it my best shot.
To me, it is about just "Slowing the Hell Down." In the last year I have bought a lifetime+ worth of hardware, and a decade's worth of software. Hardware aside, all because why? XYZ's high performing bergamot soap smells SO much better than ABC's high performing bergamot soap? With a little reflection, I almost repulse myself.
For me personally, this does not meet the intent of NB16. My plan is to use exactly the gear that I have. For me, no trades, no received PIFs, no purchases. I thought the original intent of NB16 is to use existing gear (less the amendments - TSD store/replenish (blades). My goal is to use what I have in the collection come Midnight 12/31/2015. Just my interpretation for my personal 2016 goal.
Yes, I've been going hell bent for leather with my collection. It's time to stop and smell the roses so to speak.
I'm unable to make that promise, I need a lot of stuff to be a gentleman. Otherwise, how could even survive with a mere seven soaps, barely four brushes and half a dozen razors? I need to buy something 15/01/02, early in the morning...
As Bama and a few others have mentioned, no rules need apply. Let it mean to you whatever you want it to. I'm personally ok with PIFs and both giving and receiving of gifts, as long as they weren't solicited or prearranged ("I really want an ATT 5 piece set for our anniversary this year honey..."). If you do run out of blades, or you didn't have quite enough product to last the entire year, I'm also fine with a reasonable restock to get through the remainder of the year. My goal is to spend less (i.e. NO) money, other than perhaps the occasional shipping cost for a PIF.
Just to add to what some of you have been saying...I have a shelf and a drawer full of some amazing soaps and creams. Enough to last me a few years. I find that when I keep ordering new stuff, I don't have time to really enjoy some of the nice products I already have. I don't need a PIF or a trade...I have enough to last me through several years of No Buy. But let's not overdo it...I will take this one year at a time. 2016 here I come...
I only purchased replenishment of empties, or things like injector blades that I didn't already own. Went totally nuts last year...
I know you're just having fun with us... BTW you are welcome anytime on the 30Day as guest color commentator, focus/rule in effect or not. Also, "eBay 2016" is darkly and deeply funny satire. I giggled audibly when you made that your signature.
...It's always ok to buy TSD forum stuff. The scent and product matrix produces so many possibilities that you couldn't try them all in a year anyhow. So, if you get froggy, that's a safe outlet. But, other than that, the idea is to get deeper into the collection we've already amassed, without buying new gear.
