You've probably seen me say in past posts(well, including this one now, lol), that I'm so amazed at these shave companies that pop up in here that I never heard of before joining TSD.
Interesting. As I use up my "new" products (ETA 2023...) I am NOT replacing them. My vintage and "old school" gear (Williams, AOS, MWF, Tabac) are the future of my den.
I assume stuff that has been paid for but not yet received doesn't count? If so, I am in. I should be receiving a new razor and an extra 100 blades in about February, but that's because I joined in the Rockwell T1 kickstarter a couple months ago. Other than that, I have enough razors and brushes for the rest of my life, enough blades to last an absolute minimum of a decade, and enough creams and soaps and aftershaves for about five years or so. About the only thing I could potentially have to buy in 2017 (or before 2020 actually) is a new alum block. And maybe some tins to hold opened soap cakes in.
I'll be the first to admit that constantly buying new shaving gear weekly is completely wacky. WACKY!! And being able to breathe and step back and enjoy what you already own is refreshing.
Well, I don't do it weekly, but I feel I need to do it more during the late fall through early spring here. At the same time, there are some items I have had for quite a while, and will probably CONTINUE to have for quite a while, that I do enjoy. No need to get more of them right now.
Hello Joseph and everyone, it's time for me to start thinking about an NB'17 as well. As stated "the Rose is off the bloom. " so to speak, and my purchases have slowed considerably. Although there are a few items I would like to get, I really don't need anything else. I have attempted a no buy for each of the last three years, so maybe I'll finally succeed this year. In the prior years I never made it more than a month or two. But now in the light of other considerations, I may be able to succeed. I thoroughly enjoy this hobby. I enjoy my shaves too. But as in all things, some times you have to slow down, and smell the roses, instead of going on hellbent for leather right on past them. I guess I will be joining the participants this coming year for the NB 2017. I will begin my sabbatical on 1 January 2017. I should be able to accumulate what I need to be successful by the end of December. I have one exception though, if it be alright, I plan on restoring some cracked Ball End Old Type handles this coming year, and my exception would be that I be permitted to purchase a small number of these handles throughout the coming year at different times. I will need them for both practice, and for trades and PIFs. If this would be acceptable please let me know. Good luck to all the participants, and I'll see you in the funny papers!
Just for perspective, and it totally validates your point. 12 razors 6 brushes 5 blades 20 soaps 12 AS 86400 unique combos or 236.5 years to try them all. Assuming daily shaves. Once it truly dawned on me that I had this total covered badly in just my first few months, I started to feel a little crazy.
Its an eye opener. I switched out a brush last night and I'm sick to my stomach at the amount of goods I have that are new or used once.
I sometimes ask myself..."What the heck are you thinking having all this gear?" I am organizing a new PIF as I write this post.
I am in for a NB17. I haven't made one yet, but this is the first time I have initiated it, and not SWMBO. I shouldn't need to replace any consumables, except Osage Rub, which I seem to go through at an amazing pace. Otherwise, I will likely let my soap/cream and AS collection fall off as well.
I'll probably keep going on software. I still have close to a year's worth left, and I usually get a few new pucks for Christmas. I'm planning a couple of replates and a brush or two though.
Alan, as far as I am concerned, you are welcome to make NB '17 work for you anyway that you see fit. Looking forward to some photos of your vintage razors!!
I think it is fair to say that the idea behind my participation in NB '17 is to simply take a break and really enjoy the things I have (I do already) . If one of us slips up, who cares? not I. Nor should they. It's a challenge, not a jail sentence. My NB '16 failed (I made it until the middle of May!) while I was away from home for 30+ days and the soap (Haslinger) that I had brought with me was irritating my skin, so I was compelled to buy something else. Well, that opened the flood gates. I don't know the formula Chris used to calculate the possible combinations of shave set-ups, but I can tell you that my number would eclipse his by a factor of..., well, let's just say a crap load. I am going to keep my participation light-hearted and take one day at a time. One goal I have is that on January 1, 2018, I want to have LESS, not more, than I have on January 1, 2017. Expect some sales and PIF's and used-up products from Primo in the coming year. I do have one exception . If I should stumble upon a Gillette Toggle that I can afford... Damn I really enjoy this hobby. We are really lucky to have had this shaving renaissance occur in our lives.
Hello all, my game plan is to distract myself this upcoming year, by restoring cracked handles on Gillette Ball End Old Types. Until now, I have used two part epoxy resin to repair the cracks in the handles, but now my plan is to learn how to solder them back together. In the coming months I hope to become adept at it, and I'm also hoping to learn how to fix bent teeth. This should keep me busy. I just hope all the tools I just ordered are of good enough quality so they will survive the year long sabbatical. I haven't soldered anything since high school, but in this coming year I should develop sufficient skills to accomplish my goals. Have a great night people!!!
