I have really liked the Merkur blades I picked up. I can't recall what model exactly but they are great. I have a crap ton of derby blades I will never use again as a result. I have neve looked into a slant bar razor but will check it out.
Yes I have a cheap starter strop that came with the razor. I haven't messed with it much but used it initially when I first got it. The seller told me I that's what may have given me a poor shave.
Hello and welcome Straight razors are cool. But require a learning curve most won't adhere to, it ain't for everybody. It also requires a competent maintenance that drive many away. It can be done by all, but many don't. I accomplished and enjoyed it, but the maintenance required steered me back toward de/se razors.
Hi there, and welcome! Did you do much research before you took the plunge with the straight? Youtube is chock full of videos to help get started. Search "stropping a razor" is a good place to start.
I have done a fair amount of poking around and watched a handful of videos, but I haven't given stropping much practice. I just got it back from honing so I am a little wary of rolling the edge.
Be aware, If Done Incorrectly, you can actually strop a perfectly sharpened straight razor Dull! I know that to be true, because I've done it. Practicing with the correct technique is Very important and that will take a little time and commitment.
