Just had a play with it for a while, and i would say it's handle heavy feels quite nice actually. Weight are Head 25.5g Handle 37.5g Feels odd answering this twice :whacky025
Thanks. Interesting. Maybe they increased the weight of the handle now, the one that came with the previous R41 felt very light, it balanced the old R41 head OK because the head itself was very light, but not the R89 closed comb head. Does the handle seem hollow or is it now solid? The previous one was hollow. You should contribute to the thread on SMF too so you can answer the same question 3 times This is what you get for being a pioneer with this razor, but we do appreciate it, we really do.
No problem i don't mind anyway, as for smf i'll have a nose these when i can. The handle from what i could see is solid, has what look like a brass top, perhaps muhle used the existing r89 handle, but realized it was too light so bumped it up a bit? Hopefully come tomorrow more folk will show up, it's all a bit quiet atm. I will be using my go to blade and soap, just so i know it's all razor that im noticing.
my rad cant stand the suspense .........must know how it shaves ....... must have the new shiney ... must have the precious ,,,, the precioussssssss , the rad voice in my head sounds like gollum anybody else suffer from this
Well i've just finished my shave, no nicks and cuts but i went for two passes and got a few weepers. It's a seriously aggressive razor, muhle weren't kidding when they said one pass would be enough. In the way you feel the edge with a slant, makes this x2 you REALLY feel the edge. It's given me what is probably my closest shave to date. This is with mwf and a shark super chrome.
Totally and then some, what my slant or bostonian do in two passes this did in one. You really feel that edge, at first i thought two would be needed, and if anything one pass would have been enough.
Indeed, and like a straight it'll take time to master id imagine. It was a very nice shave mind, just got to go easy, it might look gentle but trust me it bites. Im going to leave it until friday for my next shave, it is intended for three days of growth, so lets see how that goes. I wonder if it'll go through blades faster because of the aggression, only time will tell.
Sounds like they weren't happy using Merkur's mild head design and went back to the aggressiveness of R99 or even more.
Just had my second shave only with three days of growth. My god what a shave, going atg just doesn't matter with it, hell i can go wtg and probably get close to a bbs shave in one pass. Went wtg and xtg, and i can't feel a trace of fuzz on me face. You have to really respect this razor, but when you dial into it oh boy.
I just used my new R41 that came from Phil yesterday. Having iron like facial hair it seemed like it would be the razor for me, and it is. I can definitely see how it's not for everybody, it is very aggressive. The only safety razor I have that comes close to this is the open comb Micromatic, but the R41 is actually the more aggressive of the two. It is very very rare for me to stop at 2 passes, but that's exactly what I did and it was not because I was strapped for time. I'd give this a DFS+ which is typical for me with 3 passes. I used a Dorco 301 blade, which is one of the least sharp blades I have (a large order of Feathers was another of my Bullgoose items today). I used Kiss My Face Shave Cream, Pomegranate Grapefruit, a fine new flavor. I started getting a bit of irritation when I went ATG under my lip, but quickly realized that it just wasn't necessary, two WTG in that sensitive (for me) area made that spot BBS. For the rest of my face it was one WTG and one ATG-that's what I'd do again. There are two things I look forward to trying with this razor. One is mowing down about 3 days growth. This works nicely for me with a Slant Bar and with the OC Micromatic. The next is a sharper blade. I like sharp and aggressive razors/blades. I think it'll be an Iridium. If that doesn't require a transfusion I'll go with a Feather or KAI. Anybody else out there try this with a Feather or KAI? As a gentleman on a different board discovered I found that the smaller angle took some of the intensity out of the shave. I found that 30 degrees was nice for WTG and the less aggressive 20 degrees made ATG more comfortable. Sorry this is so wordy, I'm excited about this razor and I guess I had a lot to say.. _________________ Danny
Tried this razor this morning for a first shave with a day 3 Feather (day 2 or 3 I am not really sure). I was rewarded with a fantastic shave. I have a fresh one loaded for the morning and will see how day 2 goes. I really didn't think it was much more aggressive then the Old Type. I also thought the OCMM was a bit more then the Muhle. Granted this is just a first impression. It will take some quality time to develop an informed opinion on the razor.
You've inspired me, now I'll give it a go with a Feather. Interesting how our aggression meters differ. I've never understood how people think the Old Type is aggressive. I do agree that it'll take time to and many more shaves to have a better sense.
I used mine 3 times with an Astra SP blade. It works best for me with more than a day of hair growth. I don't think it's a daily shaver for me, or maybe it just requires a sharp blade such as a Feather. I'll take a few days off from using it and revisit it with a Feather blade. It is for sure an aggressive razor, but if your lather is good, use enough pressure for the razor to not be jumpy, pay attention, you will be rewarded with a very very close shave. I'm amazed what it can do in 1 pass. But it's not a time saver, 1 pass with it takes me as long as 2 passes with other razors. For this reason you cannot use lather that dries quickly on your face. If you do not or cannot use a straight razor, this is the next best thing. I think it's perfect for someone used to straight razors, in particular the kind with disposable blades.
There you go. At worst you skip Sunday shave to heal up. Chances are you will have a great shave. I really don't think the Old Type is overly aggressive. I find this razor somewhere between the Old Type and a Futur set to about 5ish. I may just be jaded right now because I have been using the OCMM for the last few days so this feels a bit more mild. I think this is the key. If you make a good lather, pay attention to the razor and technique, it seems hard to mess things up.
Like what I am hearing about this razor... Put it on my "must try" list.. If any of you gents decide to bail on it, let me know...
I had my fourth shave with the new R41 this morning. It was the first time that I have strayed from the feather blade. I loaded up a fresh Voskhod Teflon and immediately noticed the drop off in sharpness from the feather. It's not a bad thing, just different. Shaves 2-4 with this blade are normally the best for me in my Old Type, so I will have to see how it goes with the remainder of the blade life. Overall, the end result was the same a nice clean comfortable 2 pass shave with no blood or irritation. I definitely need to spend some quality time with this razor, but my feeling is that if one spends the time to master it, it will provide a nice effective, comfortable, and enjoyable shave.
