New SE Razor - Rocnel

I'm a fan of being able to disassemble, clean, oil (both razor and blade), and reassemble my razors after each shave. Blade areas of the razor I like to keep particularly clean.

Introducing new razors to the wet shaving world is always of interest to me. However, in the case of the Rocnel SE razor maybe it's a case of "you get what you pay for"? I did contact Rocnel regarding the purchase of their DE razor and more head selection (e.g. mild, etc.) information, but received no response.

If you take the time, to read all postings on this thread, you will have your answer. I believe they will be offering the medium aggression razor, first. Then the mild and aggressive will be produced.

Yes, on the their SE model, but I'm or was interested (now, I'm allocating these funds for another Tim Zowada straight razor) in their DE model. Their DE model exhibits a head with the word 'mild' on it, so I was interested in the other head aggressions.

Sir, if I may. Please click forums> safety razors>new se razors rocnel> there is a video to watch> click on pages 4, 6 and 7, scroll down each for more information before dismissing out of hand. We, here at TSD wish that all members be as well informed as possible. We do this out of respect for each others well being. With best wishes to you and good luck on the "Den"

    Bill,

I been following this thread since its inception. Initially I was interested in the SE Rocnel until I learned that the head is not a two-piece design. Why? I simply prefer the ability to clean all the surfaces of a razor that come into contact with the blade as well as oil said surfaces. I would think the vendor would appreciate constructive feedback? Writing, "you get what you pay for" is not a slam, but rather at said cost, the razor is not going to be a two-piece head.

The other part of my post was regarding Rocnel's DE—not their SE.

    Regards,
    Jim

    Bill,

Should Rocnel offer a two-piece SE of this design, even at a higher price to reflect machining/profit costs—I'm in.

    Regards,
    Jim

Yeah, no problem from TSD members (as I know them) pretty nice lot, as far as rocnel, it is what it is. " To Each His Own" -- Tony Bennett.

I don't care it the Rocnel is one, two, or five piece. If it works well, then it's a winner, especially for that price.
I don't base the quality of a razor, based on price, number of pieces, or difficulty in manufacturing. If I did, then I wouldn't have bought a Barbasol Floating Head Razor for $5.95. It was dirty, looked unimpressive, and cost under $6. I hadn't seen or heard of the Barbasol floating heads before.

If you are referring to the Barbasol, excellent. It's one of my favorites. It aggressive, but not overly. It's heavy, but very nimble, due to the head design. A tank, that handles like a Ferrari.

Then a wise buy. Great! That`s what I like to see. Pragmatic and common sense.

The company has been posting updates on their Instagram. Here is a photo of the SE from earlier this week. It's a slick looking razor! Can't wait to get it. I believe they said preorders ship in may...

It looks awesome, hope there will be an option to choose between the smooth handle and rough detailed one, I know the smooth handle some might think its slippery but I'm willing to take the chance and shave with it, it just complements the razor head big time.

I guess the dude above didn't liked the design because he cannot disassemble the razor head and he cant clean it proper. I don't know how others clean their razors but I clean mine after every shave by rinsing it with hot water, drying it out with cotton cloth and the I use cotton swabs to get into the tight areas, it takes me maybe 1 minute to do this and this way I don't see the need to clean the razor every 2 weeks with brush and soap.

From what I can tell by this razor you can remove the handle if you want to make sure there is no water stuck inside the threads and tip it over to dry out, possibly wipe out the threads that are attached to the head and as far as goes cleaning the thin opening for the razor I think any A4 piece of paper should the job, after you don't all of that sure lubricate the razor. I honestly have no clue why razor needs lube after every use LOL , what its an oil change??? hahaha.... oh and also lubing the blades??? aren't they cheap enough? If this design turns you off from unique SE razorz that's all SS and made by privateers AKA homies, then sure go and cough up $500 for the straight razor you mentioned above somewhere in your reply.

I have a razor rotation and might not get back to any specific razor for a week(s).

If you know of a custom TZ straight for that price, by all means please contact me via PM as that's a helluva deal and I will likely be interested. Thanks. (This coming week I will be unavailable, so kindly do not await a response until next week.)

youngunn Where's my TSD aftershave balm???

This razor looks saweeeet. How is this possible for the money they are supposedly going to charge? I wish I had preordered sooner, I think I'm like 3000th in line or something.

Simple machining, smart design, and quick production time. Stainless steel isn't actually all that expensive. What costs is the length of time a part spends in a machine, and how quickly the bits and drills and taps wear out, Good razors have fairly tight tolerances, which means the bits get replaced or adjusted more frequently, which again drives up manufacturing costs.

This razor probably uses electrical discharge machining to cut out the head shape and blade slot on a long bar of stainless bar stock. Then it's just a matter of slicing the blocks off at the correct size then drilling and tapping a threaded hole. The handle is easy, and is mostly done quickly on a lathe.
