No Buy July - Participant List, Rules and other stuff

Barrister and Mann has a 4th of July 10% off sale.....and me wanting some Seville.

 

I would expect as long as you aren't asking her to buy you something specific you would be okay.

 

I may have a problem... Our 30th Wedding Anniversary is coming up in 2 weeks. My wife has a memory like a hawk! She knows I want a particular razor, and has been surfing the web.
I already bought her gift. Will a wedding gift disqualify me?

I would say that as long as you aren't asking her to buy you that razor this month, you would be okay but I am not the final arbiter of the "rules."

 

If I'm being honest, the razor I want is not available right now. Which is the RR Stealth Slant. I could be wrong about the entire thing, I just wanted to throw this out. Thanks Troy. @Darkbulb

I think the spirit of the challenge ifs to use what you have, not to aquire more stuff. so if I understand it right, I would say that your wife buying it for you as part of your normal shopping is foul. still buying new stuff. if someone gives you a gift, that's a little different. but still fowl.
if one would put the gift away, until your no new products pledge is over. I could overlook that. because you can't control others, you made the pledge, she didn't.
but I'm not the judge in this. I like the break from acquiring and rediscovering what I already have.

 

Gifts are okay. I'm pretty sure Darkbulb mentioned it.

 

I have a big blade sampler from Tryablade that I dip into now and then. Right now I'm two shaves in on a Rapira Swedish Supersteel and it is a magnificent blade for me. And I'm going to have to wait till August to buy a 100 pack...

 

Like you are in danger of running out of blades in the next 3 weeks!

My wife and I agreed on whatever she's giving me for our anniversary (shaving related) we will hold off until August. After all. She has been my gift for 32 years.

You guys are hilarious... and it hasn't even been five full days yet

First of all - this exercise is really just aimed at having us take a break - relax - from chasing that silver bullet and appreciating/re-discovering what we already have.

So I don't think there is a need to have very strong rules when it comes to participating in No Buy July as a concept - a lot of it such as;
- can I accept a shaving related gift,
- can I do a trade,
- does it count if my spouse buys it for me,
- etc, etc

will have to come down to your own interpretation of what is acceptable.
If you feel you broke the spirit of the month in any way let us know.
This is obviously very much relying on the honor code anyway.

The only real 'firm' rule - and which will exclude you from being on the final participation list if you break it - is that you are not to purchase anything shaving related during the month of July.

 

You guys still using the Gregorian Calendar? I've switched to a lunar calendar - specifically the Celtic Lunar calendar, since I am of scottish extraction. Guess what? No July! It's working great...! Such a feeling of freedom! No artificial restrictions, no sense of guilt... Really wonderful, you know?

 

How many more days left in July?
