Pure luck and lots of searching. It's in better shape than the description indicated. Keep looking, it's a really nice shave.

Well, I tried flipping the Voskhod blade in my Merkur today. Today was shave #4 with this blade. This is purely anecdotal and not based on anything scientific, but I would say that today's shave was just a hair (see what I did there?) better than yesterday. So if I were grading the shaves -- and again, this is purely anecdotal -- I would say it went like this

    Day 1: A+
    Day 2: A
    Day 3: B-
Day 4 (flipped the blade): B+

So my gut feeling is that flipping the blade may have improved the shave slightly over day 3, but definitely didn't bring things back to an "A" grade.

I may try this experiment again, the same way, for the rest of this week, with another new blade. And if I see the same kinds of results, I'll try flipping it over after the first shave the next time. Could be that I am just imagining the difference.

Does anyone know why the numbers are on the blades? (Probably been asked a thousand times before.) Seems like that would indicate flipping is "normal".

Not all blades are numbered... In fact, my experience would be that many are not.

According to an old Gillette article I saw online just yesterday when I was looking up something entirely different, Gillette at least had it in mind that people would flip the blades... Sort of like rotating the tires. But I've heard some people say otherwise. And some people have said that flipping a blade could cause issues, especially with adjustable and razors that bend the blade more than others... Because it could alter the blade angle or warp the blade.

I tend to go with what I read, that seemed to say the numbers were there to allow for flipping by the end-user.

The Wiki on B&B says the numbers were probably there for quality control from the manufacturer... http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/Numbers_on_the_DE_Blade

EDIT 2: and this post seems to indicate that there is some dispute over the quality control assertion... Read the whole post here and decide for yourself: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/archive/index.php/t-51246.html

EDIT: found one of the references that advocated flipping the blade. From Gillette's pamphlet that accompanied the New Improved:

"Some users find it an advantage to turn the blade over after each shave."

My second day shaving with a "corrected" lathering method. Very nice and slippery.

Let's hope so! Don't need to lose any skin!

So I'm learning. Thought I was pretty good at it. But working with a little-used brush and new soap has shown me I've got more to learn. The guys still here for this project challenge have really helped.

BTW - I still like that name of yours. Does it have an explanation? Or is it just for fun?

(I want to change my name to something like "Freudian Schlep".)

People in Bama a long time ago jokingly called me that due to my interest in Eastern Studies.
It's also just fun to look at, and I think it's fun to say.... I also find the Samurai (Buke) of nineteenth century Japan fascinating.

Shave #11 on my Schick injector blade and it's still working great.

Looks like I may have a problem going the rest of the month with my injector though. I'm going to have to go on a business trip next week and don't have a good way to travel with it. Don't have a case or any other way to protect the blade I can think of. If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears. If I can't figure out a way, I'll probably take a DE and keep going with the Wilkinson stick.

GD... Did I read that the Personna 74's aren't made anymore? If so, you have some black market supplier?

They have not been made since the late 1970s. As to my supplier he no longer has a supply. ;)

I just finish what I start. I am a go getter like that. This is really just a de facto 30 day rule again...

The prize is increased skill and the fellowship found on this thread!
