I skipped yesterdays shave which would have been my usual every other day. Had a great batch of stubble to mow tonight. Good thing I don't grow beard anymore as I've gone past gray to white where a goatee would be. Taking Inspiration from Jason's @jtspartan software I hit the Tabac with a just starting to be broken in boar brush and a slightly opened up Clone. First lathering was a little dry but it served with today's growth. WTG done, I juiced up the 'Bac and ATG'ed my way with abandon. Third pass XTG needed squeezed lather from the brush, but it gave up plenty. Very little left overs for clean up, but I was enjoying the scent of the soap. Alum surprised me with that smooth as glass and no tingle report. I figured I'd used pressure with the upped setting on a heavy growth. Alls well for a DFS or better. The soap & vintage AS left me feeling less than hydrated, but I spent the day outside in the sun and wind. Time for a moisturizer?

@jtspartan and @BaylorGator, that is a gorgeous handle and what looks like a very solid choice of knot to match it! The two combine to make a brush that should give years of shaving pleasure. Congratulations on a great score, Randy! Even if you did have to give up your unique collectible Vietnam Battle Jungle Rot and Pepe LePew's Own Pursuit Special colognes to get it...

    November 16 - Qshave Focus

    Razor - Qshave Futur Clone
    Blade - [IMG] (2)
    Soap - Mitchell's Wool Fat
    Brush - 30 DC LE
    Post - Alum

Given the performance of the Qshave blade in its trial, cranking the razor up to 5 should make for a smoother more effective shave. Even though the gap is way more aggressive than the Fatboy at 9, you'd think that the theory would be a good one. Yeah, you'd think that. Then you'd get to go "nope...stupid idea". Which is exactly what I said during the first pass on this shave. I expected a bit of roughness but not the level I got. Seriously, I thought about scrubbing the shave and changing to a different blade or even razor. Apparently my first impression of the blade after using it on two shaves early in the month was the right impression. With this much gap it just turns into a bad experience. Almost Chinese blade bad. Can't blame the Fat with the DC brush. Great lather. This one's all on the blade.

The result, after two passes and some touch up, is a decent DFS with fairly warm alum. Disappointing, especially since it seemed so promising with the Fatboy. Clearly this blade isn't going to handle 6 so I'm not going to try it. I'll switch out to another blade tomorrow, set the razor on 6, and we'll see how it handles with some different blades. And, since the Qshave blade is an American Personna, the first one I'll try tomorrow will be the Israeli Red. Why not, right? Have a great Friday!

Friday morning November 17 - changing it up

    Supply Single Edge injector V 2.0 / Personna ( 6)
Semogue Owners Club cherrywood boar brush
    Arko stick
    Alum and Lucky Tiger

Inspired by @Bama Samurai, @PanChango and other recent users, I ditched the creams in favour of Arko today.

My Semogue boar demonstrated that face lathering from a stick is not its forte. When I use a synthetic or even a badger with Arko, I rub the stick on once and the brush not only covers my face with lather, it fills with enough surplus for another couple passes. My boar managed to work up a decent lather coating for the first pass, but there was absolutely nothing left over in the brush. I had to reapply the Arko before the second pass.

Granted that reapplying the Arko isn't precisely the end of the world: after multiple uses, this stick looks like it's down about a whopping 1/4" - and there are another 12 sticks to go in my backup carton. Still, I think in future I will use a different brush with any sticks and save the SOC boar for tub loading and bowl lathering.

The Supply v2.0 injector on its two-dot (medium) plate once again gave an easy shave. I seem to be firmly moved up from the one-dot (sensitive) plates to the medium ones on both versions of this injector. Today's shave was a two pass DFS with no effort to chase the baby -- and with quiet alum. I then complemented the industrial lemon of the Arko with the orange citrus of a healthy splash of Lucky Tiger.

Btw, I started the day with a shower using Alepeo bar soap from Aleppo. It comes either as a paste "black soap" or as brownish handcut bars. It's a traditional North African soap that I think may be similar to the black soap Neal @NCoxSTL uses, except this doesn't have plantain ash in it so it's not gritty. What it does have is a mixture of olive oil and bay laurel oil, with the laurel oil being the primary medicinal ingredient. Fendrihan recently started carrying it and claimed it was a traditional remedy for many skin problems. I have always had a problem with folliculitis (a form of acne) especially on my back, so I decided to give it a try. Even the lowest concentration of laurel oil seems to do an excellent job removing excess skin oil and drying out and clearing up inflammations. The soaps Fendrihan sells range in strength from 4% to 30% laurel oil content; I am using the 4% and so far am quite pleased with it. Just thought I would post that as general information for anybody who might find it useful.

Hope everybody is heading into a good weekend!

Another wonderful shave this morning. Last shave with the Zenith Boar. I have enjoyed using the brush and look forward to it coming up in rotation again. The hardware and software continue to work well together. The modified Gem blade has been a success and I will keep using it's performance falls off. I hope everyone has a great Friday.
