October 7th SOTD (Shave 4 of this focus) Two days’ growth Preshave: Hot Shower Razor: unrestored J. Wostenholm EBRO, from around 1865 Strop: Drygulch Leatherworks Oiled Latigo (20 laps linen/ 20 laps leather pre, 10 /10 post) Brush: Handturned Tulip Poplar Badger Soap: The Holy Black Gunpowder Spice Postshave: Cold Water Rinse, Alum Block, Thayer’s Witch Hazel Aftershave: The Holy Black Gunpowder Spice Another shave where everything but the razor, alum, and witch hazel are Artisan made. I don’t often use them as a set, but the brush and soap bowl were one of my first wetshaving purchases from a vendor named Bald Coyote Trading on Etsy. The soap and aftershave have a great smell, but I am still trying to decide if I will keep the soap as a shaving soap, or not. It will lather, but takes a little extra effort. The soap is glycerin, not tallow based. Today, I soaked the soap in water while I showered, and used my big badger brush on it. I worked it for a few minutes, and got a really good lather out of it. It can stay in the rotation. Two and a half pass today. N/S the S/N, then as close as I can get to ATG on my neck. I slowed things down today and really focused on skin stretching, short and light strokes, and keeping the angle on the razor at 1-2 spine widths. Result- “Why hello there, baby!” Only my second BBS with a straight. If I count my shaves with the Feather AC and my straights together, today is 100 shaves. Guess its finally sinking in!
30 day focus - Day 7 Fat Boy set to 7 Rapira Stainless Blade MDC 3 passes I opened up the Fat Boy to 7 in order to get a few more of the tough whiskers on the first pass. It worked and I will keep it at 7 for a while. It was a very nice, if slightly rough shave.
My sweet spots are an 8 for WTG, 6 for XTG and a 4 ATG. that gives me the most comfort on my fatboy and so far the only blades it didn't like were feather and voskhod.
October 7 Razor: 20's Old Type Blade: 7 O'clock SharpEdge (3) Day 3 on this combo, but a bit of a paradoxical shave. On one hand, it was the closest yet with this combo. OTOH, about halfway through, something just failed and the rest of the shave seemed to have a lot of tugging. (Blade fatigue?) On to the Astra SP tomorrow. JR
Today I switched to And what a pleasant surprise. Every blade I picked for this focus was picked because I read something good about it. I don't remember what I read about this one, but what a nice shave. I did my usual two pass with touch ups and got a very nice BBS with no irritation or weepers. I think this one will be a keeper if it lasts. SOTD EJ DE89 Wilkinson Sword (1) TOBS Grapefruit cream Pinaud Clubman AS Have fun!
At the end of the day on motorcycle trips, there is usually more than one "adult beverage" consumed. I refuse to say how many.
Thank you. It went well today. For the first day since May, I feel I have a chance of postponing back surgery. I will know better in 30 days if the acupuncture treatment continues the trend.
I never got great shaves with that blade, but I definitely had a worse third shave than the first two. I have a fairly coarse beard and I just don't think the blade can hold up well enough to give me three shaves. Hopefully the Astra will treat you better. It is definitely one of the more popular ones on TSD.

Axe Energizing Face Wash Boost Razor: Gillette Old Type Blade: Personna Lab Blue Lather: Shannon's Soap Falling Leaves Brush: Omega 10066 Post: Thayers Cucumber WH. Gold Bond Ultimate Aftershave: Folsom & Co. Muir Really nice shave. I have a bit of a head cold so I have no idea what Falling Leaves smells like, great performance. The Gillette Old Type continues to amaze me, a fantastic 3 pass shave. I need to shave my head later on today. Never let the things you WANT Make you forget the things you HAVE
OCtober - Trick or TREET October 7 Birthday Shave - Part 1 The box has been opened and......... More to come in Part 2 when I return from the sales grounds this evening.
OCtober 30 Day Focus -- Cadet Open Comb October 6 Razor – Cadet Open Comb Blade – Gillette Silver Blue (4th day) Brush – VDH Boar Soap – Stirling Lemon Chill Post - Cold Water Splash, Witch Hazel M-Bombed, and TSD ISZ Shaved yesterday for the first time after a day off. I decided since I did not shave Monday that yesterday was menthol Tuesday for me. So used my favorite chilling soap and AS. The razor just performs. It loves to slice through my coarse beard. The GSB on day 4 felt just as good as on day 1-3. It really is a great blade and definitely a great combination with this razor. Two pass, my usual WTG on face XTG on neck for the first, and then ATG all over for second. After paying lots of attention to stretching my face and keeping the angle (which was not easy as my fiancee was staring at me for part of the time), I ended up with only one small area of touch up to do. I re-lathered did my touch up along the jaw line. BBS! No complaints. It is now almost 24 hours after my shave. I am still very nice with minimal growth. Probably the closest I have ever been after 24 hours. Definitely no complaints from me! No shave this morning so tonight I will be trying the Ladas blade with this razor. I am hoping it will be as good with this razor as it was with my L6. Have a Wonderful Wednesday and Happy Shaving!
My father had great relief using acupuncture in his lower back. Definitely hope the acupuncture can provide the needed relief and surgery can be avoided!
Thank you. I didn't even notice it until you pointed it out. Blind Squirrel abbreviated is BS. My wife would say that fits perfectly.
