    October 18 SOTD:

    Stirling Synthetic Brush
    Mama Bear's Bay Rum SS
    ER 1924
    Stirling Unscented PSB
Ogallala Bay Rum with Lime and Peppercorns

I had a nice shave with the 1924 this morning. It is still a little slow going, but I got a DFS after a little work. This was my first use of Mama Bear soap, and the first glycerin soap I have used since my first couple of wet shaves. It was nice and slick with decent cushion. It is very light on the Bay Rum scent, but it is a pleasantly scented soap. All in all, it was a nice shave. I hope everyone has a great day!

You might need to hone up your straights. I always strop my straights right before shaving, including the strop paddle embedded with .5 micron diamond paste on leather then a good 20-30 passes on the plain taut leather strop. You really want the sharpest straight you can have. The vintage Americans, Russians, the Swedish Steel, SS all should work as well as the Japanese if honed well. Straight razors in the right hands with proper technique give that BBS every time, but can cause blood letting if you aren't careful.

Sure there may be a few straights that just don't hold great edges to give that perfect smooth shave but I'm betting it's more about technique. It's hard to get perfect and requires a lot more time than the DE shave.

Thanks amigo! highfive.gif The New Deluxe shave is closer than the New LC's shave. It feels slightly more aggressive to me.

I bought some new soaps to try based on posts here. Razorock Mudder Foker and XXX from Italian Barber via Amazon. Look like Mitchell's Wool fat seems to get good reviews as well. Maybe next month.

I thought the same think with mine. I found my New Deluxe to be very similar to the Ikon B1 OC as well. Both seem a touch more aggressive than a New LC.

I get closer shaves through shavette too. Don't tell the SR guys...they'll get upset! ;)

If you get a straight with a great edge, you can get as good of a shave as a shavette. I have gotten them from freshly honed blades from Glenn, Kevin, and a few people on Facebook. Its hard to keep any edge at that level of keen through multiple shaves though.

Totally agree. After Glen honed my Aust, it would slice the white off of rice.

Well - I had my razors honed by some guys who have quite some experience. Though even as a straight razor noob I can tell that there are differences - even between razors that have been honed by the same guy but on different stones.

I might just send one of my straights to either Glenn or Kevin some day - just to find out HOW sharp a razor can get

Yeah - I am sure I still have a lot to learn about straight razor shaving ;)

Technique and experience factor in on honing too. My last couple of focuses have been on getting my own edges. They are not as good as what I can get from others, but I am getting a much better idea of what I like and I don't like. Part of what I like about straights is being able to dial in the shave. Using a different stone, or even a different pattern of strokes on the hone makes a difference in the feel.

    Soap - Proraso Green Tub
    Brush - Omega 10098 Boar
    Ceramic Suribachi Bowl
Blade - Blade - Gillette Silver Blue - Russia
    Razor - 1937 Gillette Sheraton
Aftershave - Ginger's Garden Aventus Aftershave and Cologne

I was going to a soiree and have two days of stubble that that felt as tough as nails to the touch. I loaded a new blade into my razor and whipped up a thick smooth lather. I brushed on a thick coat of lather with the monster boar and and mowed down that stubble in one N/S pass. One thing that really impresses me about this shaver and maybe all open combs is their ability to handle tons of lather & whiskers without clogging or gumming up. Anyhow, two passes for a clean DFS. Then some great smelling aftershave & cologne that was really appreciated by the ladies. Good shaving gents.
