    I'm not having any particular problems with DE shaving. @Enrico sent me an adjustable Black Beauty which is easy to use. I think 3 is my setting.

    My nemesis is the Gem short comb Micromatic. I've only used it twice, and had the two worst shaves ever. So, I put it away. I'm surprised that it has barely any gap at all. I should post a photo of the gap. Maybe there's something wrong with it.

    Yep. It's called 'operator error.' :p
    Seriously though, the only thing that can go wrong with GEM type razors (typically) is that the blade positioning tabs down by the guard can become worn or damaged.

    Open comb micromatics are notoriously aggressive. Set it aside and revisit it every few years. As your skills improve, it may one day surprise you, and give you a great shave.

    Are they known to have a very narrow gap?

    I started out with thinner short handle but my wife didn't like it. Then I got a long fat handle and she liked it better.
