The bottle I smelled didn't have a tab, I just twisted the cap off and it was open. Maybe it was removed by someone else. I'm a big fan of classic scents, but this one just doesn't do it for me.
That's because Stingraysrock was there before you and pulled the tab I love the Clubman AS. I also have the Bay Rum, the Clubman smells better and lasts much longer. I pour it into a small spritz bottle and a few pumps and you are ready to go. It makes it last longer and for me, easier to use. How do I know it smells nice? My wife says so
It hasn't been mentioned yet so I'll add that to me at least Clubman resembles Brut. Not quite as pungent, but in the same neighborhood. Having said that I'm not a big fan of Brut but enjoy Clubman. I also use their Vanilla, Musk, Bay Rum, Citrus Musk and Lime Sec. All nice in their own way. Pinaud is an old school experience.
Hmmm... Clubman smells sort of like Brut... Interesting. I like Brut. I will have to snort some again soon.
I don't agree. Regular Clubman does not smell like Brut at all. Clubman Vanilla is very much like Brut,in fact it smells like a Brut knockoff. Just like Draggon Noir is a watery version of Drakkar.
I agree completely, Hanzo. I can't stand the scent of Brut but I love my Pinaud Clubman. Very different fragrances to me.
I like it a lot, but prefer Pianud Bay Rum and, Heaven help me, Lilac Vegetal. But for what it costs, I'd say grab a bottle! It's one of my five or six favorites. Jeff
http://artofmanliness.com/2010/10/13/how-to-smell-like-a-barbershop/ Great description of Pinuad Clubman and several other greats. The "I wanna smell like an old man club" members will really love this blog page. The "nostalgic shavers club" members will also get a kick out of it as well. So will...I guess I've already covered everybody.
Its hard not to like... but we all have different taste. I agree with a few others that it is a bit like Brut with a powdery note, which in my mind is Clubman Talc. If you liked that , wait till you try Clubman Special Reserve. I enjoy all the Clubman products, even Lilac Vegetal, all nice for an inexpensive product. A lot of people will disagree, but we all cant afford $40 for aftershave.
I could be wrong, but I think I recall reading somewhere that Clubman was an clone of Canoe cologne since Canoe was such a big hit when it first came out. While I do have Clubman, I don't have Canoe cologne so I can't actually verify the veracity of that though... What I can tell you is that: You can get cheap clubman samples here IMHO Clubman vanilla is very nice and the best of the bunch... followed by Citrus Musk (don't let the 'musk' part fool you, it's not a heavy, dank scent by any means, just more of a moderate orange/lemon scent rather than a light lemon/lime)... and original Clubman comes in third
The first time I whiffed Clubman, Canoe also was the first thought that came to mind. Since I have not experienced Canoe for eons, I cannot verify that claim either. Also, since Clubman has been around a very long time (perhaps a century or so), I suspect that Canoe may be a knockoff of Clubman. The Vanilla one does not resemble anything I have experienced in the past. It has a pleasant, light scent that does not resemble the common vanilla scent at all IMHO.
Just bought some today at Walgreens near my house. It was less than $10. My first impression is it reminds me of the barber shop of my youth. I went to a guy that did hot lather and and shaves and i think he used this stuff. Smells incredibly familiar. I'll agree with another poster who says it has an initial strong alcohol smell. I'll have to try the decanting idea if it bothers me enough. As far as the Brut comparison, I haven't worn that stuff since college. I do remember friends saying I smelled like an old man. I can't remember the specific scent, but it was old school, like this. it is very enjoyable. After a half hour, it's still with me. My nose hasn't grown accustomed to it yet. I'm not good with specific smells, but it's definitely a sweet smell. it's not terribly overpowering, but it certainly asserts itself. It'll be in my rotation with the nivea after shave balm, my Paul Sebastian aftershave and my Eternity for men aftershave balm.
I totally agree, the smells IMHO are virtually identical but Clubman has a bit more of an old school twist. Clubman's linger time is fantastic (unlike most old school aftershaves that are gone fairly quickly) to me, Clubman is a bit more like a EdT or Cologne. Lots of endurance and a little goes a long way. That said, it's effectiveness as an after shave treatment is fantastic as well. IMHO, Clubman Bay Rum is nice as well but lacks the linger time of plain Cllubman. I've said it before and will likely say it again, GI's Postulate on Old Man Smell: "Wear what you like, unless you smell like cheap cigars, Ben Gay, or beer farts, you DON'T smell like an old man."
Pinaud established the Clubman line in 1810 (source), and Canoe was launched in 1932 (source). it's most likely that Canoe is a copy of Clubman.
It is like a mix of powder, floral, old-school barbershop. I think clean and nostalgic when it goes on. It is in no way overpowering, but it stays with you throughout the day, so you get hints of it as the day goes along. It makes my wife :happy093 Do you all use a balm before the Clubman, or just Clubman by itself?
