I recently picked up a batch of razors off ebay— one of those groupings you'll find for sale with razors that have some REAL issues. I took a chance of this batch as there IS some good steel there amidst all the ugliness. For my purposes, there are some new techniques I want to practice in the restoration process and rather than risk one of my better blades, its nice to have some 'test' razors. Most of these razors have some evident 'issues' but who knows? There may a little 'diamond in the rough' hiding here. We'll see.. For about $5.00 a razor, not a potentially bad investment. (from top left to right—A Chinese-made 'Double Arrow,' H. Diamond 77, Johannes Jebens 'Sum-Extra,' Dorko Premier, Perfectworks 'Favorite,')
That and the H. Diamond have potential (and both have had similar 'heel work' done) to be decent shavers. The Dorco as well, but it has some substantial rust to remove...
I have heard some questionable things about double arrows, but I know dorkos are high quality. Ill be interested to find out.
So far TWO have a new life…. the FAVORIT and the SUM-EXTRA. Both took really fine, smooth shaving edges and cleaned-up nicely. Two down, three to go…..
Shocked the sum was saved, so little left. Curious if the dorko pulls through but that diomond looks like a winner. Care to share the new techniques?
Mainly trying some rapid short-cuts on buffer with progressive grit compounds to.. a. save time, and b. spare my wrists long bouts of hand-sanding. Usually I'll use both buffer/compounds and finish with fine grit w/d sandpaper and micro mesh (all hand-sanded)— it takes longer but I wanted to compare results with this faster method. Both of these blades were refurbished in about a 1/4 the time hand-sanding used to take. Polish applied to scales in the same manner. There's potential risk in damage to the blade so that's why these $5 gems were brought into duty.
@HolyRollah - how well did the last three blades come out? (resurrecting a couple of threads because I'm looking for something specific)
Here's the rest of the lot... The Dorko cleaned & honed up nicely...the pick of the litter! Hayashi Diamond #77 — great edge & a razor certainly worth redeeming! The Chinese Cheapie: Double Arrow 66— cleaned up & new scales. Took a halfway decent edge initially, but fails to hold it for very long. NOT part of the rotation...
Compared to the original conditions, those all look sweet. Especially that Dorco, even the scales look fantastic. Did you have to pull the scales from any of them for the refurbishment?
