I've found that steaming hot water isn't as beneficial as just plain old warm water. I'm not sure why but I've certainly noticed a difference by cooling the temperature just a bit. Something else that works for me is that I use AOS aftershave balm. It keeps my face moisturized and that helps me reduce the nicks and cuts. I also don't stretch my skin as tight anymore and I get a more comfortable and closer shave. The preshave oil is most beneficial on days like today when I was rushed and didn't have the time for a full prep. For those instances, it helps in softening the beard the same as a good prep does. But the addition of lavender essential oil does seem to help with my sensitive skin.
Would someone who's used the Floid preshave mind posting a review on it, or at least a brief synopsis. From time to time I'll take some olive oil and use it under the lather for my last pass, usually when I'm using a blade that's being used for one shave more than it should have been. It really helps that last pass be more comfortable, and my skin feels great afterwards.
I've tried using my old goop in a can as a preshave..I traded into a tub of Proraso Pre shave ..They just don't add to my overall shave. I do find, as others say above, Prepping the face so it is hydrated is key to a good shave. Hot towels..warm water.. I have the benefit, some days, of going into a sauna and that is a real beard lifter Go with the basics of preparation. I think you'll find the way that's good for you.
I use Shave Secret oil (at Walmart in the US) AFTER. I tried it as a preshave and it didn't do much. I like the scent and its mentholated. My routine is to lather with a gentle face wash (I'm using Jack from Target right now), Shampoo my hair. Then I either lather my face again or apply Feather pre shave and condition my hair. I leave the lather in my face to help keep the shampoo and conditioner off my face. I figure if it "strengthens" hair, I don't want to put it on before I shave. Some times I'm put a dab of shave lather on my face and massage it in with wet hands, let it sit then rinse it off and lather as usual. I've found that after I'm done, diluting the shave lather and applying it to my face for a few minutes really softens and moisturizes my skin. Then it's Shave Secret, maybe some Proraso Pre/Post, wait till the menthol is just past peak, then apply Feather aftershave. That stuff breaths a second life into the menthol and is a great moisturizer! I think water in it intensifies them cooling effect of menthol. Finally, GFT Skin Food.
Agreed! A good aftershave moisturizer and daily moisturizer will keep your skin much healthier and you would be amazed how dramatically it effects your shave. Your skin wills how show increased strength and smoothness. I have a few wonderful ones for men if you'd like some recomandations
I was absolutely amazed at the difference using a good quality moisturizing aftershave balm made compared to the traditional alcohol based AS. My only problem is that I've now given up my beloved Clubman AS . That scent needs to go into a balm
You don't have to give it up. Put on a neutral balm of choice and let it sink in a minute and then put on your Clubman AS.
I'm thinking that would counteract the benefit of the balm. I'd be moisturizing my skin, then drying it out. Hmm, another experiment :whacky098
If I use a splash I put it on first, apply an unscented balm about 10 minutes later. This way I get the benefit of both. The balm doesn't seem to affect the scent of the splash. Most days (at least in the winter) I just use the witch hazel, apply the balm and use a EDC for scent.
Hasn't done it to me yet. I can do it either before or after depending what I'm working with. I just make sure I give a little time between applications.
I have been doing this for a couple of years. After the shave I use the balm then AS works like charm, a very soft and smooth face is the result. Raf
Well, I know what I'm trying tomorrow. Thanks, Rich and Raf, for the advice. And to get back to the original idea of the thread, I still recommend a good, moisturizing balm after the shave. It will result in a better shave the next day.
You're welcome. For a good next day shave result, I will put on a nice moisturizer on the night before going to bed if I think I'll need it.
I did the Clubman Shave After Shave Lotion followed by Clubman Pinaud splash. So far that is my FAVORITE after shave treatment. No burning, great scent, smooth, soft, dry skin. both have caffine.
