I'm doing a sensation vs perception lab with my AP Psychology students and their grandparents today. What scent do you think they'll like best?
I think Tabac for the old folks and either Chatillon Lux or Rhapsody for the kids. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk
The big winner among the grandparents was Lavanille! The students preferred Lavanille with Tabac a close second. Many grandparents recognized Tabac and some said they used it. A very cool day!
I teach AP Psych in high school Sensation is the raw data from your senses, like "it's 40 degrees." Perception is our brain evaluation of the data "it's cold". Perception is influenced by expectations and experience. We might say that 40 degrees is cold in October, but 40 degrees is warm in February (influenced by where you live of course) The point of the lab was to compare the two and also compare the responses from the kids with the responses of their grandparents to see if and why they are different.
Terrible design, destined to fail, in dire need of Veg.... Kidding of course... Very interesting little exercise that you can repeat yearly!
So to do the test they 1) smelled blind, then again 2) with the packaging and product name visible? In a blind test there would be no bias, only raw experience. Not that packaging gives much clue to contents but seeing the name, label design, and symbols or colors might influence their perception, especially if they knew of the product from previous exposure. Did you make any wet shaving converts? Spike any curiosity?
