I don't want to try a Gillette techmatic. It sounds like an instrument designed for torture rather than shaving. From what i have read there are no blades rather a ribbon of razor steel, the idea being instead of changing blades you just flip a lever and advance the ribbon on a spool and reveal a fresh piece of a slightly mobile and therefore a face ripping strip of metal. I could be wrong. This could be the best razor in the world, but just the idea of it.... I might as well drag my face accross barbed wire then use this thing. Results would probably be the same
I'm sure they're great but I have no desire to research, select, obtain and learn how to use a straight. Most other safeties I've not used before, I'd be curious to try them just to say I did (like a Darwin, an Apollo or that rare, high-end British Gem). But to own? At this point, one would have to totally knock my socks off to stay in the house.
Some guys get great shaves from them and I'm happy for them. I've tried them several times, with good if not brand new cartridges. Results were always the same, which you described.
This razor: . Yes, it is a two bladed double edge safety razor. I actually own one, given to me in exchange for a review. Boy, no one made out on that deal. The razor does, in fact, shave incredibly nicely IF, AND ONLY IF, you have ensured that the blades are parallel to each other and parallel to the center line of the head. There is no built-in mechanism to make sure the blades line up. I still (after 8 months) have a scar on my upper lip that was torn out by this monster.
Although I own, I have no desire to use my Gillette Super Speeds, I'm giving a really nice flartip to my friend Sunday, along with gear. I have a black and red tip, I'll keep the red for the heck of it, and sell or trade or even PIF the black.
I feel like an idiot. I have a Joris in my shopping cart at Fendrihan that I've been eyeballing for about 3 months now LOL. So ignore my original post in this thread!
Ha! I know there are posts somewhere on TSD where I'm claiming I'll NEVER go the straight razor route. Someday, it'll be unearthed from the depths—just as this thread was. Per the original question Ryan posed in December of 2012: I have no desire to own— • Shavettes • SE razors • Injectors • über-cheap DE razors • Ikon razors • Rolls razor • Any cart. razor • This Razor Have owned, and would buy again— • Futur • Slant • Gillette 195 (for the right price) • SS Red Tip
I've no real desire to own anything but an open comb DE at this point, though I may some day revisit the notion of buying a straight.
I would rather have a slant than Future. I have a Merkur (travel with a Gillette Tech handle-thanks RichGem) and it is a good shaving razor.
Let me rephrase: I would LOVE to have a slant!!! The Future is going to have to grow on me a while longer. So the question is, really, would one rather have a NEW razor, or something older for the same price? Think Senator, President....
A good question that only YOU can answer. From my own experience, I started with nothing but vintage Gillettes (Old Type, New, SS, Slims, Aristos, FBs, Techs, & Goodwills)—but found I preferred the modern DE razors. Two Techs are all that remains of the vintage DEs and 3 R41s are all that remain from the modern collection.
I'd have to say any long handled razor. I've been using a Merkur HD after spending hundreds of dollars on more expensive razors. Found that the HD is about the perfect razor for some reason. Live and learn I guess
