Hi there, I'd echo some others who recommended the IK, DR Harris, and JF Floris soaps. I found each of those to be excellent, with a slight nod going to the IK. However, I have another suggestion.....heh. Please take this in the spirit of good natured humor. I'm sure you've heard that age old saying " The family that shaves together, stays together". Yeah, I think that's from the 18th century or so, but it could be earlier. Well, anyway, here's my suggestion to you. Why not get your wife involved in your 'hobby'? Sure......make it fun for her also! Lots of women use razors other than cartridges to shave with, and here's a little tip. Shaving can be romantical............ I'll include another shaving cream........one that might be a good one to practice with if your wife decided to try a DE or injector in the future. You could try this without a blade in the razor, just to see if she likes the idea. Hmmmmmmm, I don't see any reviews for it, so let me offer my thoughts. The cream is already pre whisked (very handy!), and ready to use from the container. The lather is thick, and doesn't dry out quickly once applied. The glide is good ( maybe it's the clay), but the cushion is somewhat lacking. The after shave conditioning is minimal, and might even be a little drying. Also, be sure to rinse thoroughly, as it can be a little sticky (must be that darned clay again). Still, for just a few bucks, it may be worth a try as an experiment. Look for it in Walmart or CVS in the refrigerated shaving products section. Anyway, just thought I'd mention another option.........surprised no one else mentioned this product already. Maybe cause it's not a triple mill......yeah, that's probably it. Martin
My favorite performing soap is Tabac. The scent is what normally turns people off though. I don't mind the scent so I use the it regularly. I tried other soaps but keep coming back to Tabac because it is the best performer for me. I have MWF but it is inconsistent to me. Some days great, some days I get an irritating shave. I like AOS but I don't think it performs better than C&E or Tabac but costs 2-3 times more money.
I love that Tabac, but I haven't used any of these others mentioned. For the price, Williams makes a good standby soap. Herban Cowboy? NOT recommended.
Arko is another great soap, and so is De Vergulde Hand, and there is nothing wrong with the La Toja sticks either, or the Palmolive and Wilkinson sticks.
I just ordered some triple milled soap from Jim at vintage blade that is suppose to be very much the same as DR Harris' Lavender. I will let you know how it performs when I get it. (It is also about half the price)
P 160? What is that? I really liked IK, very creamy and a good shave. I ended up selling it. Shea butter soaps seem to clog up the razor and don't rinse off well. Yes, I was looking for coconut oil cream, I have already got the lady into DE shaving and thought she would like it. I bought her a Blue Lady Gillette which she likes alot. I had received a partial tub of Taylor's Rose from JayKay a few months back which we both liked a lot. I then bought another tub but I think it was a reformulated tub, not as strongly scented as the first. So I wanted to trade or sell that one and get coconut cream instead. Seeing as how I have to build lather for her anyway, I might as well just get soaps now that I think of it. It did look like I was having to move out soon, thankfully what I thought was happening in my life never happened. As far as Martin's suggestion goes.......well......I'll keep it to myself in order to maintain the ethical standards of this thread.
Well, made a trade and will have T&H and Harris almond coming soon. I'm really looking forward to it. I appreciate the suggestions!
Jeez, sure. I'd like to try that too. Superbleu has been rather generous with the samples. Just wish I has as much to return the favor!
Harris Almond's great stuff, no doubt. Enjoy it! You might also want to indulge in a puck of AoS's Sandalwood. If you dig Sandalwood, it smells ALMOST as good as QED's. Almost. Evan
I have been shaving for about 50 years, and I have used just about every kind of soap and cream available over the years. I still actually have two bowls of the old Yardley soap!! Looking at the modern, easy to attain soaps, I go to the soaps from AOS. They are as good as the old tallow soaps were, and that is saying ALOT!! Many of todays products are not made to the same high standards that they were many years ago. This is partly due, I think, to the extremely high prices of the raw materials compared to decades ago. AOS however, really is THAT good!!
